My New Shanty Crate
« on: Dec 30, 2015, 07:59 AM »
Here was my project for the Christmas weekend. It isn’t original by any means, I found the idea from a kayak fishing site. But I thought it would be the answer to what I was looking for when I use my pop up shanty.

It is assembled out of three milk crates. Two of them I cut down with a table saw. I used thin bungee cords for the hinges. I made a second one with regular metal hinges, but I didn’t like it as well. I tied the bungee hinges as tight as I could and they work really well. There is some tension on them so the lids will actually hold in place when you open them.

I am always looking to consolidate everything as much as I can when I go out. There is the main compartment that I can fit all of my assorted tackle boxes, my plastics box, a cup for all of my hand tools, and any other random stuff. The top compartment which is about ¼ of a milk crate and can fit my large jig box and a few bait pucks. I keep the whole thing shut with a ball bungee cord. The ring on the top will also allow me to possibly hook up a tether to any hand tools if I start to worry about dropping them through the hole.
I used to carry a collapsible table with me as well, but now this can act as the table. I might look to add some more stuff to it as I go, but we'll see how this works out first.

It allows me to have one crate to bring into the shanty instead of two or three buckets like I used to carry. It also frees up a lot of room in the sled.

Nice work.  I like the 1/4 crate on top for the additional storage.

Like that idea of a lid on the top.

Like that idea of a lid on the top.

The lid is just the very bottom of the third milk crate. It was actuall the first milk crate I tried to cut into a 1/4, but one side was off and the lip got cut off.

I used a table saw. I just set up a fence and ripped them through, rolled it over to the next side and then ran it through again. Only took a couple minutes.

This is awesome. Hopefully the bungee hold up to the cold weather. Also I would drop this in the back of a jet sled with u bolts

I use a pop up shanty most of the time, so I like to keep it loose. Then I can bring it in with me and I have the rod holders, all my stuff, and a table all in one right next to me. Sometimes I go out with friends in their flip overs, then I have everything in one package as well.

Very nice design. Simple works every time! Just a few hours in the basement will dry everything to keep everything in good condition and ready for the next trip.
