fly reel
« on: Nov 23, 2009, 01:10 PM »
Does any one know of a decent priced fly reel that is really small like 2 or 2 1/2 in in diameter i would like to try one on a ice rod. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

You might want to look into a Pflueger Medalist. The smallest one is model 1492. Don't know the exact specs for it, but it's small, and solidly built. I've got one on a fly rod and like it. Maybe I'll have to switch it over for icefishing too? Not a bad idea there.

The 1492 doesn't have a drag. With fly reels without a drag, you can just press your finger against the spool to slow it down. With the Pflueger reels the bigger ones have drags (but they're not the greatest drags in the world).

Cabelas also has a pretty decent fly reel on sale right now, with a drag, but it might be bigger than what you're looking for. I believe it's the Three Forks reel?

Drag doesn't really matter to me i just thought maybe a fly reel style would cut down on line twist but i just wanted a small profile one i don't want a big one. I really don't need a drag that bad i just jig crappies and bluegills. Cheap small ones are hard to find they are pretty expensive.

Those Pfluegers have been around forever, you could probably find some deals out there on ebay or someplace selling used reels. They're not scarce by any means.

Hey you're welcome, it's a good idea, and I think I'll have to try it out myself. Do a little fly fishing in the summer, might as well use those reels in the winter time too!

Okuma vashon 3/4 wt large arbor retail $120.00.  It's about 2 3/4 inch diameter.

I remember seeing a Pfleuger fly reel that clicks only, no drag.  It's small for 1/2 wt and has a small reel arbor.  I think it was only about $25.  I passed that one up because I didn't want to reel against the clicker.
