man made structure
« on: Feb 25, 2005, 01:36 AM »
just wondering if anyone sinks their own structure in any of their favorite fishing spots?  I want to create some type of fish-holding structure to bring more fish closer to our dock so the kids can have some more productive fishing.  I know a lot of people sink Christmas trees but they can be real snaggy to fish around-especially kids.  Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the website I linked below and look about half way down that page. It says "Habitat Management". It shows picture of structures they use for our lakes in PA. Click on the lake structure drawings on that page. It even gives you a material list.

another idea would be ones made out of bamboo.  Its a hot topic over on the crappie board these days.  Visit www.crappie.com, then click on articles then read the one for crappie condos.  Its a good idea and easy for making structure, thats if you can find the bamboo

You could probably make those "Bass Trees" out of PVC pipe -- just drill holes for smaller dia. pipe for the "branches" -- sink it with a hunk of lead or steel.   Put some flotation in the top so it stands upright underwater.  What a concept.....I gotta try this!!

problem with white PVC is that in clear water, people can see it...i would use black PVC...it will warm up with the sun's rays, which encourages algae growth on its surface, and will be virtually unrecognizable

Read an article in one of the fishing magazines some time ago (wish I had saved the article). They used floating line of some type. I would think that old fly fishing line or something similar would do. The bottom line end was attached to a weight and a bunch of these were dropped into an area. The Length of line was adjusted so the line would remain below the surface, even at the lowest water level.

This replicates the natural grasses that some water areas have. Within a few days algae and other things attached to the line. Minnows would begin to hang around the area. Within a short while these areas provided habitat/structure along with food/forage for fish that would otherwise not hold in the area.

I think these could work and would not be a susceptible to snags like the other types of wood structure.

If anyone has the article, let me know the magazine and issue.

Thanks,

PM me to swap information on fishing holes or to go fish'in sometime in the Syracuse Central NY area (Onondaga and Madison county water holes in particular).
