I have been shopping around for a good balaclava. And I keep seeing the same old thing everywhere, but wondered who do you think makes the best balaclava and what material is used...

I dont like ones with seperate eye holes  OO and a small mouth hole.
                                                         o
I has hoping to find one with a single oval eye hole  and maybe no mouth hole just a breathable material. I cant seem to find what Im looking for? any suggestions

:) My wife picked up just exactly what you described at The Fishin hole. The name on the label says Moon Shadow. Looks like it will do the trick, now all we need is some time off work so I can try it out.

the polaris dealership carries a balaclava that is made of thin polartec fleece. its thin breathable and very warm. wears well under a snowmobile helmet too. paid $15 for mine.

One of these from Outdoor Research should fit the bill.  They're probably a little pricy, but I have some of their gear, and it is very well made.  Check out this link.  If it doesn't work, just do a Google search for "Outdoor Research" to find their website.

What Thor said.  OR balaclavas are the best I've tried, IMHO.  The secret is the windblock material.  You can find OR stuff at Campmor or Hilton Tent City.  Hilton's has the best deal going.  Lowest cost ---- free shipping ---- and 10% off for mentioning that you saw the itme on the net.  Oh, and OR makes some very nice gloves / mittens.

You could also try one of the heat exchanger masks.

I used mine for the first time on my deer stand.  I was happy with it and believe it made a difference.  The air kind of tastes funny when you inhale, but it's not a big problem.

Just a thought.

Howdy all,

I too recommend Outdoor Research. The best quality polar fleece and windstopper membrane in their hats and balaclavas. I came to ice fishing after many years of ski mountaineering and winter camping. OR products are no compromise.

I would recomend the Under Armor Brand balaclavas.  They might be a little pricy, but they shed away swet when a little to warm, and they are thin enough to wear a baseball cap over.  Use mine fom everything from football, to hunting, to icefishing.  Just my 2 pennies.

yeah, but i would rather pay a little more for a quality product that is going to make my days last a little longer and pay a little extra for a product that will last a little longer, plus i got a $250 gift certificate to cabelas for christmas, i figured that was the best time to buy one

I got an old rag wool one that has to be 15 years old. Do not remember where I got it but love it.
