Anchors- I mean "auger's away"
« on: Jan 20, 2018, 10:19 AM »

Went to Black Pond in Middlefield yesterday. Popped 9 holes & added 10th. As soon as we finished & were pulling up the auger, the shaft came unscrewed from the head. 20' straight down like an arrow. My buddy decided to go get some rope and a large magnet. While he was away, I tied my bait bucket metal handle on to some line. After 10 minutes, the battle was on. I hooked her. She wouldn't budge though. Ended up snapping my ice line. My buddy returned with rope & 2 250lb. rated magnets. We tied each to opposite ends of the rope. After 15 minutes with so many hits on the auger & no luck, we tried a new approach. We originally kept magnetizing each magnet, thus acting as 1 large 1. I waited to he was attached to auger. I then lowered mine and was attached. We tried bouncing it a little & it worked itself free of the highly sludge filled sediment 20' down. 5 minutes later, bingo! Oh yeah. Rewarded with 2 pickeral all day & 1 auger!

Amazing you got it back, yet said that was the catch of the day worth mounting!

Congrats on the retrieval

Nice! Another plus for gps. Drop a waypoint, pick it up in the spring.
I should’ve chosen Fishin’Mortician as my username… ;-)

There's a 10" strikemaster auger sitting on the bottom of Colebrook Res. that use to belong to my brother.

I have GPS numbers on two, neither of which was ever mine.. They make nice structure to fish.  ;D

Elderz.  Seeing you have GPS on 2 augers, try the magnet technique.  Works great.

Thanks. Anyone else in same spot, use technique. Simple, yet accurate.
