I almost never fish tip ups for gill; I love to jig and always employ jigging tactics whenever possible. One day, I was struggling to put together a catch on a lake that is chock full of gills. Being over two hours from home I was really hoping for a couple fresh fish dinners. Anyway, it is shallow lake, the sun was out, and the fish were totally negative. I put out a Windlass tip up with 4# leader and a small horizontal jig with a wax worm. Was steadily jigging nearby but the Windlass still caught more and bigger fish. It was however right around freezing with a light breeze; optimal conditions for that set up. Now, I usually will use a Mr. Jigger and a light or UL spinning rig in those situations; a lot more fun handling the gills, especially the bulls.
First year I ever caught them on tip ups. Set them up for the occasional crappie and wham-o! bull gills!
