We received six inches or so of fluffy snow just north of I-80 yesterday.
The small pond I fished this morning in southern Linn County had about 4" of ice it, with liquid water between the snow and ice. I suspect that pond was slow to freeze up, but I still would have expected more ice than that. I do know that it will not get thicker nearly as fast as it would if that snow were not on top of it, even with the below-zero temps.
Point being if you got a bunch of snow yesterday in southern Iowa do not assume the new ice beneath it is going to be safe.
