This storm seems blown out of proportion to me but we will see.

93 was nuts! The ice went out around April 20th that year followed by the flood.

Got an update from Cornell last night on their latest "State of the Lake".

Adult walleye numbers are down a bit to around 350,000. The 2010 year class was very good and they expect it to add 150,000 adult walleyes this summer.  That confirms (per Cornell) that it takes at least 4 full years for an Oneida walleye to get to 15". So we will still be around 450,000 - 500,000 again this year.

They say the perch numbers are up to 1.7 million right now, up from 1 million.

Smallmouth reproduction was poor last year and their numbers are on the decline. They had been on the incline for several years.

The first naturally reproduced Oneida sturgeon offspring was captured which is a good sign.

I know my first reaction was 1.7 million perch really??? Remember how many lookers we are all reporting this year though. I mark perch everywhere I go but getting them to bite has been more difficult this winter.

Them stripers seem quite well fed, at least the ones I've caught anyway, spitting up HUGE wads of shrimp, wigglers and the such. Maybe that's got something to do with their picky attitudes.

I was reaserching perch, read many papers written by cornell that date back too the 1940's,  I learned a lot, good shad yrs, bad shad yrs, good white perch fry yrs, bad yrs, good emeralds yrs bad  ect... you get the picture, the lake is only at its healthiest or peak when its a mayfly yr or yrs, perch, eyes only do good at the same time during this period, meaning bugs and wigglers are the key player in the ecostystem, I did not know this.  Those big sturgeons main forage are bugs, mayflie larva being there top diet....if they get successful, could be a restricting factor later for health of the lake.

Interesting stuff Shane. Mayfly create a nice buffer for the small perch and small eyes. To get back to the "hay day" numbers we need something else for the eyes to feed on. Round Gobies could be that something...

widespread 2 ft statewide, 42 inches in Syracuse.
I remember that storm. I was stuck at the Hancock field for 10 hrs on my drive home in Phoenix 481 was like a war zone of abounded vehicles if I remember correct the count from Syracuse to Phoenix was over 70 vehicles . All the businesses in Syracuse let out at the same time northern boulevard became a parking lot real fast. We just sat it out in the main hanger at the base until they reopened  the roads. Then that night we got hit again from lake effect I remember plowing everyone out with my fathers backhoe trucks were useless.

Certainly hope the forecast is wrong, but don't think so.  Right now 5 & 20 corridor looks to be the line of mixed precip.  Don't see 20" probably 10", however did anyone notice as this storm departs it leaves us with cold temps teens on thurs & near zero thurs night?
Wind also shifts some from NW to more WNW.
Lake effect as this storm leaves seems possible with a target somewhere between the thruway & hastings.

The good news however the heavier wet stuff will settle and compact & the wind will blow alot off the lake that night.

Fingers crossed

OMG, this could be devastating for ALL of us in the final days of Walleye season.  :'( Hell, maybe the rest of the ice season for that matter.  >:( I think this stuff is gonna be super heavy and most blowing of it will be very limited, the weight will surely make whats already becoming sloppy around the cracks a nightmare in the making.

Just ran out to the bank and the paper store, 54 degrees!! Feels like summer out there, had the windows down!

Heard the latest forecast totals for the Buffalo area a few minutes ago......16 to 18 inches.  That's a lot of freakin' snow!  A lot of HEAVY freakin' snow!!  >:(    Pretty much a fitting end to this season, we were just real lucky the stars lined up just right so that what we had to work with was as salvageable as it was. Had some fantastic conditions out there, a couple BAD snowfalls, followed by Godsend thaws and refreezes.......Guess it all could have been way worse right?

I only got 5 days in December(bonus) 10 days out january and 6 days out in February, that's only 21 days, shoot did 40 days last yr and 30 plus days the yr we only had 7 weeks of ice...  my normal is 36-40 days, way off this yr, hate too say it...I'll take a milder thinner ice yr any day.  These long winters come with added head aches and big bills.

Always worried one of the throttle jockeys is going to catch that.  Right out of the SE corner of the bay and go ripping right across there. :-\

It was an Epic day on the lake today.  Ice 75 keepers by 6:20....................  Just Kidding. LOL.   I did get a limit but they were 6 inches, 13 inches and 14 7/8.   Overall it was a very slow day.  Still better than being in work.  Oh well.  On to soft water...

fished today and was it quiet out there for a nice day.....but then again I am recently retired and never fished during the week  very often.....fished out near 121 and had a great day.....at least 35 jumbos....tossed em all back....was testing some new ideas......and my freezer is pretty full....I like to fish I guess.....firmly believe the noise thing now.....I fished the same holes as yesterday and marked just as many fish but yest. only landed 7.....yest. was pretty crowded out there with lots of traffic.....today not so much and they were reacting more aggressively....right in the middle of a pretty good flury a dic-weed pulls up 8 ft. from the shanty and the fish scattered for at least 15 minutes......could be just coincidence but I don't think so.....politely asked him to not do that to people in the future....he wasn't impressed with my presentation , but got the message.....I'm liking this retirement thing
impressive for sure. my hands shake when i put 12" perch back. its kind of like letting 130# doe walk by ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D
