I am sure there are a lot of ice fishermen out there like me. I enjoy some drinks on the ice. Most of the time it's some kind of garbage light beer, because I can't drink 6-8 Sam Adams or Dogfish Heads in a day of fishing. Coors light, Mich light... whats the difference, it's just a beer-like drink while I'm fishing. But every once in a while I like to have a shooter on the ice, so I carry a flask of something, usually something fun and different to give guests that join me.
I just finished a bottle of Jack Daniels Honey, before that I filled my flask with Crown Royal Maple. I liked both- probably the honey more than the Crown Maple. I need to stop buy the store tonight and I'm thinking of some Red Stag, but I'm not a Jim Beam fan too much.
Anyone have some suggestions? What do you like in your flask if you partake?
-
I'm more of a schnapps guy, I like blackhaus or rumplemintz. Hight test helps warm up!
-
Definitely a bourbon for me. Which one? It doesn't matter. Love that corn liquor!!
-
Jameson.
-
mr boston blackberry brandie or butterscotch YUMMIE
-
crown royal black is my latest kick. I usually just take some home made brandy/wine though.it's about 19%-20% on the vinometer!
not a real big drinker though. little nip here or there to warm the pipes :)
-
recently bought a bottle of mcclellands isly single malt, the first few drinks were gawd awful but then afterwards it just seems to smooth out, im finding i like the heavy smokey peat flavored stuff and best of all, those that usually swank my stuff cant stand it ;D doctorgee, nh liquors just started carrying paddy whiskey this week, its a light tasting smooth whiskey on the lighter side of jameson, goes down extremely easy. been looking for the stuff since my first sip 20 years ago and now we have it. its on sale right now for 19.99 a fifth. i bought a few bottles to celebrate st pattys day, or is that a week celebration, or maybe its a month starting this weekend ;D
-
It usally jack or jim but Crown royal is the best!
-
Crown is at the top of the list, Black, Maple or Regular it's all good. I tried some of the Cherry flavored whiskey cannot remember the brand but it was good, mix it about 70% whiskey and 30% 7up and it is really nice!!!
-
Try out some Jim Beam Devil's Cut.
I don't like regular Jim at all but that stuff is pretty good, they apparently squeeze it out from the wood of the barrels they age in.
-

Lots of years ago, in my early twenties, went out fishing with my Irish buddy- no bob house and coudn't afford good winter clothes at the time so we grabbed a 5th of tequila out of cupboard, the wife saw it, put her foot down that we could not bring that much stupid with us -only allowed a pint canning jar full. Did you know canning jar rubbers are soluble in tequila? Took a lot of spitting but did manage to stay warm!
-
I like Fireball.

There is no such thing as a bad burbon just a better burbon. So any kind of scotch or whiskey will work for this guy. I don't have time for a man who drinks and I will share a beer with any man who doe's drink. Doesn't make any sense to you? It shouldn't cause it doesn't to me either. A boss of mine told me that 13 years ago and I am still confused.
-
You're mistaken!!
All bourbon tastes like paint thinner!!!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/DRIFTER_016/Emoticons/tease.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/DRIFTER_016/Emoticons/tease.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/DRIFTER_016/Emoticons/tease.gif)

-
I'm not one that thinks dinking on the ice is a good thing. Just seems like impaired judgment out there or a lack of motor skill could produce bad things for oneself or others really quick. So I go with mtn dew or hot chocolate.
-
I do not think that having a drink while you're on the ice is a bad thing. If you are somebody who has a problem with drinking or if you get so intoxicated that you can't think straight, and then try to get into your car and drive home, that is a problem.
As with all things in moderation is key.
-
Bookers is really potent but you migh melt the ice if ya spill lol
-
Some Jameson's, or Johnny Walker Black.
-

Dinking, is that like catching those small perch ? Surely, you don't keep those things !
Or is it something we need to treat as a sleeping dog and just let it be ? ???
-
for me it is either barenjaeger celtic crossing or some glenlivet 25yr old
-
King of beers for this guy. Need I say more
-
This year will be homemade plum gin, and I still want to try Jim Beams devils cut.

Try out some Jim Beam Devil's Cut.
I don't like regular Jim at all but that stuff is pretty good, they apparently squeeze it out from the wood of the barrels they age in.
I am too a fan of the devils cut.

-
Apple pie moonshine!!!!!
-
winter Jack is awesome tried some this past weekend and is only available in NH for a short time (from what im told) definitely going to fill the flask with that
-
B&B - Brandy and Benedictine. Mix 50/50. It's generally 80 proof or so, and it warms you up pretty good on a cold day on the ice.
-
That's a no brainer either Crown Royal or my own homemade Apple Pie ;D
-
Anyone have some suggestions? What do you like in your flask if you partake?
IceHole Schnapps of any flavor!
-
A thermos full of Tim Horton's coffee & a bottle of Philips Union blended whiskey.......and I won't be coming off the ice until they are both empty!!

I'm a Basil Hayden Bourbon man.

on the ice, cinnamon schnaps
-
I like Fireball.
me too.
flask #2 is usually a $5 gallon of port wine
-
Gotta say McGillicuttys menthol mint schnapps is my go to on the ice. All though I just made some apple pie liquor that another guy on ice shanty provided the recipe for. Pretty good, tastes just like apple pie! I thought it would make around 3 fifths, but it ended up making double that!
-
Just tried Jim Beam Devil's Cut. Like it very much!
-
Jonny Walker or Glenfiddich, and on the hard water there's no need for more ice! ;)
-
dr.mcgillicuddy's mentholmint schnapps
-
wild turkey American honey.mmmm
-
Jamo 18yr
-
Kraken rum and cokes. Let it sit outside for a few to turn it into a slushie. There awesome when it gets to hot in or tent.
After reading this thread, I need a drink now. Lol
-
Blackberry brandy ;D
-
Patron XO Cafe, tried this last night, agave tequila with an esspresso kick at 70 proof, really great stuff ;D

The last several years it has been Red Stag but this summer the little old lady at the liquor store pointed me toward Birddog [ Black berry Wiskey ] and I gotta say it's darn tasty.
-
Can't believe Grand Marnier hasn't been mentioned! Gramma neat, you won't believe it's 40 percent until it's too late. LOL.

Southern Comfort, Patron...or most likely... REAL Apple Pie (not that sissy crap made with Everclear).

Jeez theres so many I dont want to leave anything out, makers mark blackberry brandy wild Turkey rock n rye pepper schnops etc etc just about anything last year I made some shine with apple cider and getting ready to make a batch for this year it comes out real good last year's batch was around 85 proof but it went quick so this year were going to make way more then last year so it lasts and it would be nice to see how it is aged a bit
-
I like to mix it up depending on mood, weather, and company but Johnny Black is my go to. Keeps me warm on those cold days.
-
I like scotch in the flask. To many good ones to list but The Famous Grouse is tasty.
-
Ullr, BB Brandy, or fireball.
-
Anything from my homemade whiskey to hot chocolate with Kahlua and bailey's in a thermos.

Mine comes "off the tap" in the 170-180 proof range....I then cut it back to 110 and flavor it....
Sounds like you are using a pot still....
-
I do. The second run comes out at 78%, run it though a modified Britta water filter a dozen times or so, then I cut it down to 40% and put it in a 26 liter carboy with six bags of oak chips, and leave it sit in there for a couple of years. Makes some darn fine whiskey!
-
Did the apple pie a couple of years ago, but didn't really like it. Never hear of cherry bounce, but not a big fan of cherries, so probably won't make it. I like making Kahlua and Irish cream, though. I also occasionally soak strawberries in the 40% cut stuff for a couple of weeks, then strain the now red alcohol and add sugar to sweeten the deal. The ladies love it, and we call it liquid panty remover.

Nice! I will have to try that!
I make peach, lemon and Blackberry as well

Mine is full of pendleton. Or depending on the company we take ask the fixings for red beer.
-
sambuca
-
Blackberry brandy! ;D
-
whiskey
-
test

Woodford Reserve, Makers Mark or Bulleit

I've always been a whiskey kind of person and for a few years have been keeping the stock holders at Red Stag happy but this summer I tried Birddog Blackberry whiskey and that's my new grab for.

Enjoyed some Apple high proof shine this weekend, those Apple slices are POTENT
Apple pie? I made some once but didn't really like it. The others liked it a lot, though.
-
Try some Butter-Beam:
1/2 Jim Beam and 1/2 Butter Scotch brandy
chill, shake and sip
-
I'd like to add to my list now. Jack Daniels Tennessee honey, red stag
-
BOURBON!
-
I switch between Marie Brizard blackberry brandy or a Tito's Vodka martini
-
Apricot Brandy this weekend....mmmmm
-
I like Fireball.
Always bring a couple little bottles of these, the fire warms you up on those cold days! Plus we drink to the fish gods when they present us with an opportunity to thank them for their sacrifice.
-
Blackberry brandy ;D
-
Depends what I brought in the sled ;)
Usually rum cause the sled has coke, whiskey works too if the state has a sale on Whiskey.
Other wise it's white rum all day long. Like Jack Sparrow says "Why is the rum gone!." ;)
-
No flask here...but I will wreck a case of Michelob!
-
I've been filling up with Jameson's, but of I felt like splurging it'll be single malt glenlivet or glenmorangie
-
Try out some Jim Beam Devil's Cut.
I don't like regular Jim at all but that stuff is pretty good, they apparently squeeze it out from the wood of the barrels they age in.
Same here and I picked up the Devils Cut tonight and I am enjoying it now. Much nicer then the regular Jim Beam.
-
Jim Beam Maple....its like breakfast in a bottle
-
dr mcgillicudys
-
Blackberry brandy ;D
-
Bourbon. I have Knob Creek small batch 100 proof loaded for tomorrow. Fireball, Old Grand Dad 114 proof....:)
-
So this isn't in a flask, but my buddy once brought out blackberry brandy he warmed up and put into a thermos. It was a cold day and man did that warm you up.
-
Standard Canadian Club but now I have so many ideas.... LOL - not much of a drinker but a small nip here and there to 'warm up' well before wrapping up the day on ice.
-
used to be ginger brandy....now it's dr mcgillicuddys....only time i drink this is on the ice..never to excess...usually a nip after first fish is landed is customary @)
-
Jack daniels to warm up here and there
-
I take a swig of E&J VSOP every once in a while to take the edge off. If I have enough homemade apple pie leftover from deer hunting I will save it for ice fishing. That stuff is dangerous though, haha.
-
rumplemintz usually gets the job done or a lil blackberry brandy
-
Fireball or Dr.McGillicuddy's for me.
-
Peppermint schnapps
-
50% hot chocolate and 50% peppermint schnaps
-
If I took a flask out with me, it would probably be filled with Kraken Rum... 94 proof...
Although I usually don't drink on the ice, but I can really slam some cleaning fish! On the ice my beer usually ends up half drank and frozen, I'm just too interested in catching..
<°)))>{
-
yeah, I'm a bourbon guy too. Jack Daniels old no.7 in a pinch, but I'm working on a bottle of Old Ezra right now.
-
Cinnamon icehole.
-
Wild Turkey American Honey is my whiskey of choice!! Add some coke and it is sooooo smooth!!
-
UV Blue
-
Coffee, hot, black, and sweet! The booze comes after I get home!! It took me many, many years to figure this out!! ;)
-
Coffee, hot, black, and sweet! The booze comes after I get home!! It took me many, many years to figure this out!! ;)
Agreed sailor!
-
I either have some sort of whiskey or my home made apple pie that I make with Everclear. Stuff packs a punch but tastes incredible.
-
;D ;D don;t drink anymore myself. I usually bring a couple cans of that Arizona green tea on the ice with me. after reading this thread and seeing all the different concoctions you guys came up with, I gotta say I'm truly in awe! :o would've loved to partied with some of you guys years ago. un huh ;D ;D

-
Tea with honey here while fishing ,
-
Jack Fire or Fireball!!!!!!!!
-
Gunpowder
-
I rarely drink on the ice but when we do it's our own raspberry extract. We take fresh raspberries from our garden and fill Mason jars with them and then pour 151 Everclear over the berries and let them sit for a month then strain and enjoy.
-
Jacquin's Blackberry Brandy........ ;)2
-
I really don't mix fishing with drinking. I'll take a nip but that about it.... It's not worth the consequences of getting a DUI.
-
I really don't mix fishing with drinking. I'll take a nip but that about it.... It's not worth the consequences of getting a DUI.
I drive for a living so the spirits wait till I get home. then a couple of sips of Templeton rye.
Keep it safe! JDL
-
I'M A CANADIAN BLENDED GUY--CROWN ROYAL OR VO. DOESN'T HURT ANYTHING TO ADD SOME TO YOUR THERMOS OF HOT COFFEE ALSO. NOSTROVIA
-
Whiskey...the only thing better than a propane heater on the ice. Kessler and coffee if it's an AM outing. My homemade bourbon if its the afternoon.
-
Tell me more about the home-made bourbon.
Thank you.
-
Usually Jameson , however Snowshoe Grog has made quite a few appearances.
-
usually allens coffee brandy with milk. unless i have beer, then whisky of some sort. but anything really im not picky. sometimes I reuse small maple syrup containers as my flasks.
-
Old Camp, it's a peach pecan whiskey. Smooth!!
-
Coondog- half Jack Daniels half blackberry brandy
-
I seem to always be the guy driving so its usually coffee for me. Wife likes to keep a bottle of fireball in her pocket when she is out with me to keep warm
-
When I do carry a flask, I only carry Scotch whisky, usually a single malt. Right now I'm sporting some Dalwhinnie 15, but I've been known to carry some Johnnie Walker Black Label when I'm in the mood for a blended whisky. More often than not I'm supposed to be the responsible adult, so I don't get to partake in the ice very often.
-
Apple Crown.
