Strikemaster 24v vs M18 drill

Just looking for feedback on what people are using to power a 8" lite-flite. I got a deal on a used 24v with 6" auger but looking to upgrading to 8" and wondering if should continue with 24v or sell and get a milwaukee or dewalt drill.

I ran the SM 8" LF most of last season w/Milwaukee 2804 w/5ah battery no complaints . I drill 20-30 holes in an area no issue with battery life . The Eskimo Pistol Bit is another good choice ...the speed difference is minimal ..but the Eskimo uses Mora/shaver style blades which can be cheaper and easier to find and can be sharpened by hand with a minimal skill set.

I prefer the Milwaukee setup w/ nero style adapter. it's lighter & breaks down to a 2 piece assembly that fits in my gear box. I use the nero because if the assembly slips out of the drill chuck, it's 11" wide to one side & won't wind up on the bottom of da lake. Also it's a good idea to secure the adapter to the auger sleeve w/ a sheet metal screw. It lets you remove that big plastic knob that likes to grab hoodie strings.  ( don't ask)

the M18 with the 8" lite-flite is my exact set up. I bring out 2 5ah batteries but I don't think I've ever had to use the second one. I think i've drilled maybe 28" of ice with no issues. you won't be disappointed. if you go with the pistol bit just make sure you get a newer one with the center point. if you don't have the center point (which the older models did not) the drill tend to walk around a bit before biting.

I’ve been using a Milwaukee Fuel with a standard 8” Lazer and a 12AH battery going on a decade now. I use it with a Clam Plate. Fantastic setup for ice under 24”. Haven’t been on more than 24” of ice in probably 15 years. For what a new StrikeMaster 24v costs, it’s hard to beat a drill setup unless you’re constantly drilling several feet of ice. Not saying a drill setup won’t do it but it’s taxing even on the best drill/batteries.

Having said that, I’ve never used any powered auger other than my drill setup. If you already have the 24v head, I’d just upgrade the auger bit and call it a day.
