I finally got around to painting up a couple of golf balls and tried them 3x so far. My hole is big enough that I can have a ball down and also a 12"-14" sucker minnow.
Over the 3 days on ice using the ball , I have watched a lot of fish and in my case it seems like 2 - 5 pound northerns came into the ball. Anything over that came strictly into the sucker. Do you ball users find this to be the norm or have you had luck seeing bigger fish on the balls?
None the less I was impressed how well the balls drew the pike, and bass in.

Do you have it on a spinner or just let it rest motionless?

I have been putting the string between my thumb and forefinger and spinning it every 3-4 minutes. About every 1/2 hour I give it a tug up and down. So far it's been a toss up on moving or still when they come in.

I use painted golf balls quite a bit - seem to use the half red / half white most times. I also add a small eyehook to the bottom and at times attach various spoons (no hooks) to add a little flash - I do use a battery operated spinner to rotate the rig. Works surprisingly well and it's interesting to watch a pike s-l-o-w-l-y glide in and stare at it with some gently bumping it.

My first year spearing ever i had a red/white golf ball with a wind chime spinner slowly rotating the ball.a northern rushed in and swallowed the ball and that gave me time to spear it right in the head.i have not done well spearing since that day.

When I was a youngen my Dad took me on Lake Winnebago to see his friends sturgeon spearing shack. I'll never forget looking down the hole and seeing a Blatz beer sign 10 feet down. He told me I should keep that a secret. Well the word is out now.

Typically it's just the golf ball by itself attached to line via a screwed in eye hook. I will sometimes add a second eye hook at the opposing end (bottom) of the golf ball and attach a spoon such as a Daredevil or the like. Some guys will just spin a large spoon by itself.
Often times the golf ball setup is run on one side of the spearing hole and a typical decoy is run on a second line on the other side of the hole at a different depth. Having the two lines in the water can help judge the length of a fish if you know the distance between the lines, 25" apart for example.

Fish are pretty curious creatures for the most part and will investigate a lot of things like that sign. Bowling pins are another favorite deke you often see used. For pike I've started using the cleaned up and dried shoulder blades of deer I harvest that I paint up - read somewhere that's what Native Americans used for decoys many generations ago.

Yep, they're not the brightest creatures, by any means. Anything unusual suspended tends to attract attention. My Dad used old full beer cans painted with different color stripes on them as decoys when I was a kid, and they worked.
Just tied the line to the pull tabs. If he lost one, all he was out was an old skunky can of beer.

They certainly did not float when they were spear decoys. Maybe he cracked the tops or they were empties? I am pretty sure they were full, but I could be mistaken, it was a long time ago.
I was a little kid at the time 30+ years ago, but they were most definitely old painted beer cans. White and red, and yellow and black stripes were the two patterns I remember he used on them. There could have been others, too.

Empties would make sense. I might try it. Cheap and plentiful. Plus the no wasted beer part is a definite bonus. Budweiser already comes in red and white. Thanks for the idea.

I remember him spearing quite a few, so they did work. Not sure if they're better than a decoy, but definitely cheaper :P
We didn't do much spearing after I was maybe 6 or 7. The old truck Dad had bit the dust, and he got a little 4wd Subaru wagon to replace it, so we had no way to haul the hardfloor house. Ended up downsizing to a little portable, so spearing was pretty much out after that, unless we went out with someone with a permanent already set up.

Thanks. That's all I need. More stuff to try....Thinking those practice balls with the holes, painted, and attached a foot or so above bait on my tipups. :-\
