Funniest think you've see on the ice?
« on: Feb 08, 2021, 10:07 AM »
I'll start. I didn't witness this personally, but an old taxidermy customer told me about it. Said she was sitting on a bucket jigging away when unbeknownst to her a big dog came walking out on the ice behind her, climbed on, and started humping her. She screamed, "Stan, Stan, help!" to her husband that was fishing a fair distance away. He came to her aid but was laughing hysterically. Her not so much. By the time she told me about it years later, she thought it was funny too, but it took her a while to get to that point.

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Buddy saw the Jaw Jacker go off and ran to get it. The ice was clear, clean and wet. He tried to slide to the hole and ended up taking out everything. Slid past the hole and wiped out the whole show. Then scrambled back to get the rod only to pull out a 11'' trout. HAHAHAH I was dying.
Who knew iceholes could be so fun!

Watched two guys try to put up a hub in 25mph wind. It took off, they took off. They chased it for a good 20-25 yards before they gave up and let it blow across the lake and crash into the other shore. They fished for a half hour or so then went and got their tent and went home.

Brothers brother in law let his brand new I-phone slip out of his hands and slide about 3 feet into an 8 inch hole.  The fish finder app/camera jokes rolled on and on until he called for someone to pick him up at the lake instead of going home with us.

2 of the funniest thing ive ever seen was 2 drunks on glare ice try snd walk on completely bare ice with no cleats about 600 yards falling over and over until they got back to the launch.they were exhausted and yelling at me to stop laughing.the 2nd was my buddy thought his doghouse hunting blind was superior to my shappell fx100 until the wind picked it up and it wrapped around his head for a minute then took off blowing across the lake..hahaha im still laughing about it now and that was 10 years ago.

A story that I found hysterical was happened over 20 yrs ago.

I was fishing with 3 buddies. Flags out, not a bad day that I remember. We are just having a good time. We are drinking and enjoying some herbal relaxation on the ice.

So one of my buddies nickname was Pyle from Full Metal Jacket.  He was a marine, a bit crazy, so the name fit.

Anyways, he is buckled by like 10:30, by 11:30 he was baked out of his mind.

So we are all just fishing, hanging out and we notice Pyle is no where to be found. At first we thought he may have hit a wooded area to take a leak but 10 minutes went by, half hour went by. Nothing.

At this point we are starting to worry. No way he fell through, ice was thick everywhere. He didnt leave because his gear was there, he had traps in the water still.

So its 3 of us, inebriated looking for our buddy. Im pretty sober at that point from looking and worrying after an hour or so

My buddy is walking to his truck to get more beers. He gets off ice and starts up the path.

Then we heard it. A loud crack of wood. We all look and see our buddy Pyle. Falling, actually it was cartwheeling from branch to branch as he fell about 30 feet to the ground. We rush over to him thinking he had to of broken something. He rag dolled his @ss down the whole tree  ;D

We get to him and all he said was " I dont get it, my cat does this all the time and he doesnt fall"  ;D

So my buddy was so messed up he climbed a tree, fell asleep and then fell out of it.

He passed away a few years ago but my other 2 buddies and i still laugh about it to this day.

I miss him, he was a nut but he was caring, loyal and always found a way to get a laugh out of anybody.

#1 - Often ice trips can become a little "social" and equally as often there is some blackberry brandy involved. On one occasion my great-uncle Harry, age 88, had a good bit of "socializing". Fish weren't snapping so some slushballs, bucket lids and a football got tossed around a bit. Then someone discovered that you could do a belly-flop with a boat cushion on the ice (total glare ice, zero snow) and slide a good ways. Harry jumped right in and was belly-flopping for the best part of an hour before he got tired. We had to pile him into a sled and pull him back... Good stuff!

#2 - On one of my son's first ice trips the weather was very breezy. No snow (again), tipups in and we were just sitting on our buckets waiting for something fun to happen. Big gust came up and Junior started sliding across the lake on his bucket. "Daaaaaaaad!" Good thing I had creepers or I'd never have caught him.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

I had husband/wife friends of mine along to ice fish for the first time.  Both veterinarians - him a dairy reproduction specialist (embryo transfer specialist) and she, small animal.  We were having a good day catching bass on tipups and bluegills jigging another buddy's dairy farm ponds.  One tipup flagged and she took off to catch the fish.  Another flag and he ran to get it. Both were successful at setting the hook and the fight was on.  Actually, more fight than expected and one would be gaining line while the other lost ground.  It occurred to us that they were fighting the same fish and playing tug of war under the ice.  Once we figured that out one quit fighting while the other landed the fish and sure enough the bass had two hooks and shiners in its mouth.  I don't know how but it created a hell of a tangled mess that the two of them set to straighten out and there was quite a bit of bickering as they tried to work together to untangle everything.  I went to help at one point but it was clearly something two people married for close to 40 years could handle without me contributing to their arguing. They were fine when all was done.  It seemed like something you'd see in a cartoon fighting over the same fish under water but it really happened.  When asked later how many fish they each caught, one would say X and a half, the other Y and a half and when asked how you catch half a fish they would explain.  Doubt I'll see that again.

Was on the ice fishing with my best friend. Fishing was slow. Asked him if he wanted some of my blackberry brandy. He said no, I have my Crown Royal. Told him I was going to see how other people were doing. Took a walk around the island. Came back and found he drank all of his Crown Royal AND my blackberry brandy. Then tells me (as he fell off his bucket) that next guy who catches a fish, the other guy has to bite the head off the fish. Of course I caught the first fish. The fish drool coming out of his mouth was hilarious. I’ve posted the picture of his drooling face every year (for the past 10 years) on Facebook and he still gets pissed at me when I do it.
A Classic moment that still brings tears to my eyes,

Was fishing on a windy day.  The group nearest me was packed up and drug their stuff to the edge of the ramp.  As guy #1 was getting the truck a big gust of wind came up.  For some reason they had just slid their chairs to the edge of the lake still set up.

Well guy #2 manages to grab one of the chairs.  The second chair starts taking off sliding across the ice.  He throws the chair he's got up on the bank and starts taking off after the chair that's going for a ride.  He runs after it a hundred feet or so, but can't catch up, then falls flat on his face.  That damn chair blew the entire way across the lake throwing in a spin once in a while, but it never tipped over.  Just kept sliding further away with him cursing and throwing his arms up in the air.  Took him a good 20 minutes to walk over to the opposite bank to get that chair and bring it back.

Fish thief! I caught a smallish trout and was hoping for a bigger fish so I put it on a stringer down a hole and tied to my auger. I caught another bigger trout so I pulled the little one up to release it. Only half a fish was left. I left the half fish on the ice with the tail over the hole and watched an otter pop up and grab the fish trying to take it back under but couldn't get it off the stringer. He ate the rest of the fish leaving only the head still tied to the stringer. Then a DEC officer came doing license checks and saw the blood and guts and head and wanted to give me a ticket until I told him the otter was the culprit and showed him the other fish I had packed under snow by my shanty. A few days later at the same place another guy told me a big giant fish story and how he couldn't get it through the hole. He said he thought it might have been a beaver or a big carp because all he saw was dark brown before his line broke.

My buddy and I did that jigging together in a 2 man flipover. Both caught a fish one right after the other and then both fought back and forth for a minute until we realized we had the same fish. Same deal except ours was a perch with two jigs and some spikes in his mouth.

Funniest thing I ever saw was actually funny because I heard it. My buddy (different guy than above) and I were fishing about 15 yards away from his brother and one of his friends. We were both paired up in 2 man flipovers. We had a buddy heater in ours but the other 2 guys actually dragged out a full size kerosene heater in theirs. Some of their cans of beer had frozen and, unbeknownst to us, they had put one on top of their heater to thaw out. All we heard was a loud POP, followed by a **censored** and a lot of colorful language! You guessed it, the can had exploded all over everything and they spent the rest of the day grumbling and getting dripped on from the top of their shanty. I've never laughed so hard in my life  :roflmao:

Years ago when my wife and I would go out she would bundle up pretty good.  Nobody would hardly ever now she was a lady.  You didn't see many ladies out there then.  Guys would always walk near her sometimes to take a leak and not realize the person was a women.  So we can up with a code when that would happen.  She would give me the signal and when I thought the guy would be about half done relieving himself I would yell real loud,  "Hey Darlene are you catching any fish."  The guy would get startled and would start looking around and forget he was taking a leak and he would wet his ice suit.  It was pretty funny watching him walk around with a wet circle on his ice suit.

Had another buddy that liked to drink a lot.  One time he was so drunk we had to tie him onto his box.  When he went home with the guys he rode with he forgot to turn his lantern off.  Thru everything in the back of the station wagon and they headed home.  It wasn't very long before they had to stop and put out the fire out inside the station wagon.  The guy threw his ice suit on top of the box with the lite lantern burning.

I could go on and on  With 63 yrs of Ice fishing I've seen plenty of funny stuff and stuff you wouldn't believe happened.

My story is similar to a couple posted above only a lot more intentional. 4 of us fishing on a river channel nailing 6-8 wipers on ice rods.  If anyone has caught a wiper on an ice rod they know its a blast and the fish usually tangles up anyone close.  I had just landed a wiper and happened to notice that it had a line wrapped up in it from a buddy that was fishing about 15ft from me.  He had set his rod down and was grabbing a bite to eat.  So I pulled up his slack line until I got to his spoon and with a gloved hand got a firm grip on it.  Got the other two guys attention so we had video of it when the fun began. So Andy (ill use his real name here in hopes he reads this lol) goes back to fishing and hes trying to take up slack in his line... when I give the spoon one giant ass tug almost yanking the rod out of Andys hands  and the fight was on... Im talking to Andy for a good 5 mins while his drag is screaming as I yank he each tries to take up line. The other two guys standing around Andys hole videoing the entire thing go down.  When he finally figures it out he was flat out pissed and it was pry the hardest the three of us had laughed in a long time.

That reminds me of an old trick I would pull on my dad and friends.
When they weren't paying attention, I would give their line a quick tug, quick enough that they didn't see me.
Then I'd sit back a s laugh as they proclaim "Wow that was a big hit!"

A number of years ago a buddy went to the woods to take a leak. While he was gone another buddy reeled up his line and placed a condom on his lure and sent it back down the hole. When our buddy returned from the woods we told him to check his line because we saw his bobber move a couple of times. As he was reeling up his line we could hardly contain ourselves. When he said he felt like he had a big one on, we just lost it. The condom had filled with water and you should have seen the look on his face when he brought it up out of the hole. PRICELESS.

Was not a witness, but passing the story along:

Father and son go out on glare ice in western Montana. Set up the hub shelter and stake it down with plenty of ice anchors, because it can get very windy. Fish inside nice and warm in a howling gale, but when they come out looking for their 4 wheeler, the thing is gone. Blew all the way across the lake, which was smooth as a skating rink. I have seen people anchor to their wheeler, but I thought it was just to save an ice screw.

I'd bet that I have posted this before.  If so, sorry.

The biggest laugh I've gotten on the ice happened on a trip to the strip pits in SW Indiana.  3 of us were fishing just as dusk was
turning into serious dark.  Suddenly a flat out flyin' cottontail crested the adjacent high wall, blasted down the slope and ran out on
the ice right through our group, heck bent for the other bank.  Almost immediately thereafter, 4 coyotes crested the high wall in hot
pursuit.  They saw us just as they ran out on the snowless ice.  When they tried to hit the brakes, the ice,  their momentum, and the
laws of physics took over.  It was a scene right out of Wile E Coyote and the roadrunner.  I don't recall what we caught that night, but
the show was worth a million bucks.....

fish on,

Nobody else saw it, but...I had helped towed a guy off the lake.  He drove his little car out onto the lake when there was still about 10-14" of deep snow here and there.  He had just driven off the trail path where everyone drives by and gotten stuck.  I saw and noticed then went on over to invite him to just fish with me.  It was an unsuccessful fishing day so had to pack up and go home.  I had a tow strap so I hooked one corner of my tow point on the truck to the other corner off a tow point of his car.  I went to tow him and what I noticed from behind was his car just fish tailing behind me.  I was laughing to me, thinking he was having fun...when he may have been worried about it.

I have personally been involved in one of those epic fish battles that turned out to be the same fish also hooked on my buddy's tip-up 50 yards away, who was also having an epic fish battle.  Both our epic fish battles turned into a simple battle to untangle lines.

One thing that really made me laugh was a YouTube video where some pranksters secretly hooked a live lobster on a newbie's tip-up when he wasn't looking, then put up the flag.  That one took a little pre-planning, but the effect was well worth it.   ;D
