Actually they do up towards the N pole in the summer-24 hours of daylight.

Calm down ya old mutts, I think the midnight start is smart..can pay for the derby/get bait days in advance. Start fishing/claim your spot whenever the heck ya want and not worry about a fish hooked at 6:58 during a 7am or “sunrise” derby start. Avoids ppl all racing out together yada yada... Start your day with at 5am, 7 or noon🤷🏼‍♂️. Always thought that derby should have a crappie division..would for sure bring more anglers into the tourny while adding another catagorie...rings a bell with that midnight start too. Anyone else for the crappie addition?

Crappie and walleye..but midnight start now you have guys fishing the day before anchoring a stringer under the Ice until midnight.

You got me started again on this midnight thing..

..here's a seneario ok I am not putting anybody Dow at all I repeat this is my opinion only not out to affend ok..my thoughts if a family derby is not starting it at midnight..I'll use me as a talk about for this..I have my kids for the weekend .ok take my kids out at midnight in the dark on ice in the middle of a lake.checking tip ups .uh oh where's my kid what do I do..call 911..what's your emergency.i lost my kid ..where are u sir.im in the middle if otisco lake..do you have a light sir .no my batteries died.ok where did u park..side of Rd middle ok lake.all the time u don't know where child is..all u can do is hope and pray he's or she is ok . Takes a split second to lose your kid in the dark on ice in the middle of a lake...I would be lucky if my wife ever let me see my kid or kids again I'm sure a shiner to boot...you yourself can get hurt also it very dangerous in the dark..remember this can be true and sad but it can happen with the most reliable adult..it's just a sceneario I'm not downing anyone..a night derby awesome for adults not kids..that's any age child...again only saying not putting anyone down..7am to 5 pm good hours for a child and adult catagory.pressure cracks also can't be seen in the dark..ok I'm done now..

Yep I fell in a hole alright..7 fractures on the ole hip..just glad it wasn't a 6 foot hole if ya catch my drift ..

..and the funny thing is I was fishing for several hours stood up out of my shanty talked to fishslayer took one step that was it ...black ice with water on top you will never see a hole ..1 step that was it then down..thank God for fishslayer being a hand reach away .oh you also won't know if there's a hole that has slushed over with snow on it either..I don't know us I've fisherman put ourselves in God's hands every time we hit the Ice but it is fun I don't know..

Big guy you realize you don’t HAVE to start fishing when the derby starts correct?? Worried about your kids? Go at 7,8,9, or noon. Not sure what ya mutts are having trouble with here. You start a derby at 6,7 you’ll have the nitpickers that b***h about people entering ice before that. Seems like a great way to avoid those ppl that dig into every detail of a tourny and find something to whine about...oh wait here we are loll

Night derby isn't safe why start it at midnight if you can't fish it yep leave your kid home go fish at midnight leave your fishing spot to go get your kids too funny.ill play golf

The weather conditions are going to be Brutal. on Saturday. !7 degrees in the AM, with 18 mph winds. I don't think many people will start much before sunrise because of the cold and the disappearing shore ice.

Doing ok here Trapper. If we don't get any snow you won't need a Smitty sled. I built one a few weeks ago and there hasn't been a need to use it yet. My jet sled pulls just fine on the little bit of snow we've had on the ice.
