Hali-Man,
Hippocrates (hĭpŏk′ rətēz), c.460–c.370 B.C., Greek physician, recognized as the father of medicine. He is believed to have been born on the island of Cos, to have studied under his father, a physician, to have traveled for some time, perhaps studying in Athens, and to have then returned to practice, teach, and write at Cos. The Hippocratic or Coan school that formed around him was of enormous importance in separating medicine from superstition and philosophic speculation, placing it on a strictly scientific plane based on objective observation and critical deductive reasoning.

Ironic eh? :)

I liked the hippo transport idea though.

And now a word on hippo transport.../b]

Press Releases

December 13, 2002

FedEx Express Does "Whatever It Takes" to deliver Hippo just in time for Christmas

FedEx offers its network and expertise to transport hippo from Basel Zoo, Switzerland to Dublin Zoo, Ireland

London, United Kingdom - December 13, 2002 -- Federal Express Corp. ("FedEx Express"), the world's largest express transportation company, today announced it will donate the use of its express transportation network and logistics expertise to transport a female hippo from Basel Zoo, Switzerland, to Dublin Zoo, Ireland. The hippo will become a companion to Hoovie, Dublin Zoo's famous hippo who was orphaned when his mother, Linda, died in September this year.

FedEx Express, along with thousands of people, was touched by the story and immediately contacted Dublin Zoo to ask how they could help. Following a European appeal, a suitable female Hippo, Heidi, was identified at Basel Zoo and FedEx is delighted to be transporting Heidi on a direct flight from Basel to Dublin and to be providing Hoovie with a companion just in time for Christmas.

"It is a privilege to work with both the Swiss and Irish Zoological societies, and to assist with the relocation of Heidi," said Des Morgan, Vice President, Northern Europe Operations. "We were touched by Dublin Zoo's recent loss. With many little children even sending in their First Communion money to buy Hoovie a present, offering the use of our global transport network was the least FedEx could do".

Mr. Leo Oosterweghel, Director of Dublin Zoo added, "We were very concerned about Hoovie when Linda died and we set out immediately to find him a suitable partner, which was not an easy task. Luckily for Hoovie, we managed to locate a suitable female hippo at Basel Zoo in Switzerland and thanks to FedEx, Heidi will now join 'Hoovie' when she flies in on a chartered FedEx flight from Switzerland before Christmas. This is a wonderful ending to a very tragic beginning and I guess we will just have to wait and see if romance blossoms!".

The hippo will be transported from Basel, Switzerland direct to Dublin, on Friday December 13. On arrival at Dublin airport, FedEx will use its customs clearance expertise to expedite the very special shipment through Irish customs and deliver the animal on a dedicated FedEx vehicle, straight to Dublin Zoo. Heidi will need approximately one week to settle into her new home and make friends with Hoovie before meeting any visitors.

Iceman, Hookedonice, and all....I wasn't going to post anything on this thread because neither Case nor Silver is anywhere near me, but then I got to thinking about the big Tupper Lake derby every year.

Simon pond is small, maybe Chen or Hood can bring in details, I'm not sure.  Now I don't know how many people fish Case or the trap attack, but I think the numbers for ther Tupper derby runs from 1000+ to over 2500 people hitting the ice on the same day for one day, and that is just those that enter, we all know there are many that do not register but fish anyway.

Has it hurt the fishery on Simon??  Maybe....but fish any lake and you're going to start taking out the breeders, it doesn't have to be a derby weekend to have a bunch of guys on the ice.  Once a spot gets popular then everybody heads there, it happens all the time.  I'll bet if guys like CrappieDaddy on here would have seen Black Lake about 10-12 years ago for crappie fishing they'd be amazed.

If the organizers of the event run it well, have proper facilities on hand to provide for garbage disposal etc, porta johns, then helps big time, even though there are some that would drop their trash on the shore if the dumpster was 10 feet away from them.  Perhaps if a smalll press release was given before the derby in the local paper stressing not the derby itself, but the rules concerning the handling of fish, catch and release and the manner in which the derby would be conducted would help as well.  It's great to promote this "Trap Attack", but the locals in lets say, Minnesota aren't concerned over porta johns, the people of Perry NY and surrounding area are though.....cause it's in their backyard.....

It's good for the local economy for sure, and a well run event with rules about catch  and release, only live fish being registered helps, and promoting these issues actively ensure many of the so called "sportsmen" out there actually think about what they're doing instead of letting the "other guy" think about it.

Sorry this rambles....just my .02 as I'm waiting for my coffee to get ready....

And for those of you wondering just what is a hippo crate made out of ....

For example, there was the time a new hippopotamus, Hercules, arrived at Belle Vue from Whipsnade Zoo. He had been shipped in a massive crate made out of thick wooden beams reinforced with steel bands, for the hippo is not a creature to be trifled with. It can hurl itself forward or spin round on its hind feet with remarkable agility, it is as unstoppable as a tank, and it delivers a fearsome chomping, crushing bite. To be on the safe side, Whipsnade had given Hercules a dose of phencyclidine before sending him off and had strongly recommended that he should receive a further shot just before he was uncrated in Manchester. They feared that otherwise an irascible hippo might emerge and make his way like an express train, walls and so on notwithstanding, towards the city centre.

Hookedonice I agree a little on what you’re trying to say. Releasing the dink fish back to the lake is not harming the fishery at all. This lake is very poorly managed by the dec. if the dec is dumping breeder trout in this place those trout need a lot of feed to survive. I here we have a few walleye in this lake to help thin out the small fish too. Case lake is a reservoir it would make an excellent crappie fishery. I don’t here anybody on this site talk about trying to do a crappie project on this lake. all we have here is a bunch of guys who like to throw stones at each other. I agree we have a lot of small crappie in this place but the lake has to many predators. The biggest one with two legs standing over an eight inch hole with a dream to fill up a 5 gallon bucket of nice crappie. You forget to mention one important thing. what about the fish kill we have here every summer due to the high lake temp. Don’t you think this kills more fish then your fellow fisherman. We need a fish that can stand high temps like crappie and bluegills. Trout need a thermocline to survive the long hot summer. Its makes no sense to stock trout in this lake at all.

Apply this statement to your ways of thinking..."There are in fact, two things: science, and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the latter ignorance."  I would definitely not imply that you were a physician. Maybe an English professor, or a dictionary spell checker, but hardly a physician. Although you being in construction trades probably constitutes your fair share of sliver removal and emergency bandaging.....

Hali,
I was referring more to Hippocrates placing "enormous importance in separating medicine from superstition and philosophic speculation, placing it on a strictly scientific plane based on objective observation and critical deductive reasoning."

It seems we have a lot of opinion and not much factual evidence regarding the effects of these events. One fact is proven, people have a lot of fun fishing tourneys.

Ray4852, I don't believe that fish kill in the summer is a factor because there is still a lot of this lake that is 20,30 and 40' deep and it is fed by a creek that has numerous springs running into it. I agree with you that it would make a great crappie fishery. It's still a good trout lake to. I just think that there are to many perch. When all the fish are competing for food as they are the growth rate is stunted or slow at best. The walleye that were dumped in there were done so illegally.
btw, I seen you out there on derby day. Nice doggie, I patted him on the head, he looked like he enjoyed more than just a hotdog.

RG, I think people have a lot of fun fishing and a tourney is just one more reason to go.  ;)2
Hope we get the chance to meet someday. If I get in your neck of the woods for any length of time I'm going to bring my tennis racket, haven't played in years. But I still love the game.

this thread got me to wonderin' about how many fish were actually caught, so i went through all the tally sheets and counted all the fish in each category.
here are the results.
31 trout
23 crappie
72 bluegills
364 perch
total of 490 fish caught by 161 fisherman. an average of 3.04 fish per angler.

after having gone through the tally sheets and seeing the sizes of these fish i'm willing to bet that more than 80%were released, (its just a guess).
relatively certain that our derby hasn't harmed our fishery. although it has helped us to raise some money to pay insurance so that we can set up in the park and have the kids come see santa clause at christmas time along with other various things in the community.

NICE RESEARCH TIM!! THERE YA GO!! END OF STORY LOL  anyway i personally fished the derbyand i rarely keep fish where ever i go and i KILL UM AT SILVER!!!! LMAO!!!  seriously, i fish cuba and throw back 90% of what i catch this is my rule everywhere , but hey thats my deal right? i dont care if anyone keeps fish, just dont be hogs...after all fish are for eating but not BECOMING ANOTHER PERCENTAGE OF THE OBEASE (sorry i dont spell check lol) american pot bellys food source in our abusive country!! keep a few throw a few back i say.....anyway what I DID SEE AT CASE SAT was the several judges tha twere set up to measure fish were all over the lake set up in spots with cones, with yard sticks and HOLES CUT IN ICE RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE MEASURE TABLE which i thought was a great idea...and i saw most guys anyway that i veiwed (in btwn beers) release the fish, NICE IDEA!!! and its beeter than the plastic bag thing they do in wellsvile trout derby to take to the judges which can be 3 miles away from farthest boundries
with some lil kid yanking out an eagle claw hook out of the poor fishes mouth showing everyone then putting the fish in the bag and attempting to get it ALIVE lol to the judges station lol, oh wel just my 2 cents, but i liked the way case was run, but i did read the number of fish caught and the guy who caught over 300" of perch i assumed released all the dinks? lol
The Best TIME of my life was when I could disappear for DAYS on end, trolling the gutter on an epic bender, PAUSING ONLY for meals and the amount of time it took me to take money from my wallet and place it on the BAR!!!!! <br />[iii]D[/color]   I AM ALSO A RECREATIONAL SPECIALIST, best and Fastest, Boats, Mini Bikes, Coldest Beer and Fast chugger...ha!
