Reporting Live (sort of) From the Schroon Lake Derby
« on: Mar 03, 2012, 11:21 AM »
Rain has gone away, sunny, mild, 40's.  Lots of folks out there.  So far at the Fish & Game club there is one 7 1/2 lb laker , no salmon, and some not very impressive pike , as of 11am.

You better batten down the hatches if you end up getting the 50-60 mph winds we are getting now. Good luck...

Stopped by F&G at 4;30,  one pike at 17.88lbs, another 17+,  salmon at 3.5lbs,  pickerel 3.5,  perch 14"  1.5lbs,  laker still at 7.5.    Snow on lake melting fast with nearly 50* temps today, however edges remain mostly good.  Colder temps coming in tonight should button things up for the morning.

I hear ya about the pics, two problems.  SL F&G does their derby this way,  they go around the lake collecting big fish caught.  They label and put them in plastic bags, bring them back to the clubhouse, measure and weigh, then leave the bags hanging outside on the front deck.  Or sometimes your just seeing a name on a bulletin board.   So if someone wanted to take a pic, it would be a shot of a fish curled up in a Grand Union bag.  Not very impressive.  The other problem is I'm a self taught computer idiot who hasn't quite figured out the posting of pictures.  Eventually I'll get it,(just like I figured out copying and pasting)   :-[

Thanks for the reports Tony.  Sat. our group of 14 guys caught just 4 18-20" lakers and a couple of shorts, all from holes about 20 ' apart over 50 fow.  There were teeny finger perch jigged but only a few.   Everything else was zilch.   But fun was had by all, especially 5-6 guys that stayed in Saratoga and painted town red. They showed up 11am and were the ones catching the fish!  those of us up at 330am on the ice at 6 got diddly.  go figure :)

On Sat. afternoon, we saw a man walking out from the town park behinf Stewarts (with no gear), crossing the very thin ice and slush next to open water. We could only assume he thought it was ankle deep.  Sure enough, kerplunk, he went in to his neck... but quickly crawled out and made a long walk back up the hill towards the Stewarts.

It is a beautiful lake with a wide variety of fishing options.

Schroon Lake official ice-out occurred today, March 22, a mere 18 days after the close of the ice fishing derby.  Earliest ever in anyone's memory.

I was wondering the same thing. After they are weighted in the go in a plastic bag?! So how many fish end up in the garbage? This sounds like a bar tourny not a fish and game tourny!

Tony, the guy who caught it is a friend of a guy I fish with here at home! The fish reportedly is 47" !!!

For the guys complaining about fish beinG killed, that is why we have size and creel limits. As long as they are legal fish, it is none of your business what people do with them.

Sounds like some real nice pike.
