favorite two spoons orjigs for largemouth bass ?
« on: Nov 08, 2018, 12:09 PM »
When the ice arrives I would like to catch some largemouth bass in a couple of nearby ponds  , I do not know what to use for a lure , it seems from what I have learned so far that keeping the lure small is a good idea and that a 1/10 oz swedish pimple is a good choice , if anyone could share a couple of suggestions I would appreciate it .  THANKS

Not really in the small category, but I like the Lindy Rattling Flyer spoon or CJ&S slender spoon.  Something that searches off to the side of the hole.

Other than that, just regular small bluegill stuff catches me many incidental bass.

When at farm ponds, I always have a deadstick minnow down for the random chance at a crappie, bass, or catfish.

Jigging raps, ultra light rippin rap and slab rap are great. Any lipless crank bait but I love the LiveTarget.

I’ve started catching more and bigger bass once I started using a chubby darter. I haven’t used the slab rap enough but it’s caught a few bass too.

Do not be afraid to use 1\4 or heavier lures.

The list of favorite lures and colors will go on...

Depends on the day, or time of day.  Depending if the fish are aggressive or more neutral, you may need to go small.

As others have said, standard panfish jigs can work well, including small tungsten jigs with plastics or wax worms.  When the bass are finicky, I find nuclear ants from CJ&S work well, slowly fished up and down in the water column.  That’s my go-to setup late in the day as the sun is setting, and I think it mimics planktonic forage that comes out that time of day.

If the bass are active, anything goes.  Some good bets: Chubby Darters, Rattl’n Flyers, Northland UV forage minnows, Jigging Raps, kastmasters, Swedish pimples.  Try them all, and good luck!

My number 1 large mouth lure for over 50 years , kastmaster 1/4 or 3/8 oz depends on that day , silver with white marabou tail. About a foot off the bottom

Rapala Ultra Light Rippin' Rap is my go to for bass. I start with either Glow Yellow perch or Pink Tiger. The part I like is how crappies and pike also love them, although pike can steal them pretty easy.

Bass are fun to catch but I don't like eating them that much, but pickerel and pike usually bite the same baits and I like eating them. I grind them up and make patties. Pretty much anything that will imitate a baitfish will catch either as well as crappie and perch. Set a few tip-ups with minnows and sit down to jig up some panfish. You'll get some bass.

Rapala Ultra Light Rippin' Rap is my go to for bass.

This.  I call them "bass whistles".  Start pulling two foot rips and they come running.

Seriously when jigging for gills and  crappie,I've caught some really nice size LM. Last winter on a two day trip to Presque isle Erie Pa. my son and I caught 30 Pm between 16"-22" all on tiny jigs size 12-16's. They where all in the thick vegetation. When the panfish stopped biting the bass move in. I've caught a lot on tip ups with big shiners. I really don't target green carp.lol

I think I've caught more largemouth bass on Lindy perch talkers then I have perch. And I also do really well catching them on shiners even if they're not my target

I catch a lot of  Green Carp I mean Largemouth Bass on Tungsten jigs of all sizes with plastics. They maybe by-catch to me but a 5# bass is fun.
