depends on what lakes you normally fish. if you go fishing for lakers in deep water, and also hit some shallower lakes for gills and perch, then go with the 9/19. if you mainly fish lakes less that 50 feet deep, i'd go with the 12. just my opinion.

I find myself using the 9 degree transducer for most water over 25 feet deep. I use the 19 for shallower waters. The duel beam works quite well. My brother just got the FL - 18 12 degree transducer and I'm sure it will perform well in the 30 - 60 foot range for lakers that we fish. My FL - 8 is still awesome though.

Not enough ice or time... not necessarily in that order.

Don't rule out the 9 degree transducer in shallow water.   It may reduce the size of the cone but it will show fish that are tight to the weeds or other structure that won't show up with the 19 degree transducer.
I've found that I use the 9 degree more than the 19 even in shallow water.
Much clearer picture of what's going on down there.

Nice thread and great ideas and thoughts.  I just bought a new Vex w/ the 9/19 so this is very timely.  The way that I figure it, I'll probably use the 19 on most of the water that I fish, but if I get over 25 I'll switch to the 9.  Still, I may just take Log Cabin Jones advice...

...I'll know more as the season gets into swing.  Right now we don't have ice yet so neither degree is working for me right now ;D

LCJ:  I too have used the 9 degree transducer in shallow water almost as often as the 19.  Remember, that the wider the beam angle the greater the possible dead zone.  As stated on the Vex website,  I have found a narrower beam angle to minimize this area significantly.  Especially for those bottom hugging walleye! ;)
