Post by: jflood on Oct 28, 2007, 07:16 AM

For those who live up there of have fished it for years when is it normal to get good ice ???

I am no expert nor do I live up there but have friends and contacts that do,it has happened before, ice in mid to late november but from what I understand it is usually around mid December for widespread, fishable ice.The water temps right now are still warm for this time of year and those forecasted temps sure are encouraging, but we still have a long way to go.

I have fished the Fulton Chain and Raquette Lake area a bit, its a little farther south but temps are pretty compariable but I have met some guys out that way that have been fishing a lot longer than me, they all said they have been on fishable ice around Thanksgivng a few times.

Earliest I have been out was 1st week in december, Usually I'd expect to be out on safe ice by Christmas or I'd be bumin.

It varies from late Nov. to late Dec. depending on the year.  I did see my first snow flakes this afternoon  ;D and there was a cold NW wind mixing up the lake so things are starting to shape up

I just checked the forecast - it must have changed.  About 20 degrees tonight in the Dacks, lots of freezing nightime temps.  The wait begins!

With the exception of last years weird weather, the fishable ice has been right around December 15th for the last 6 or 7 years.

There was decent ice in late Novemeber in 2005 I believe, but you can't count on that.

Yep, usually mid-December around Long Lake.  However, last year Lake Eaton was open water on New Years Day.  One week later I was driving my 4 wheeler on 8-10 inches on the same lake.

The surface water temps of many of the ponds in the area are hanging in the low 40s.  There has been skim ice on some of the beaver ponds in the mornings.  Making progress, but it will still be a while.

Not for anything but has anyone noticed the difference in forecast  temps between accuweather.com vs weather.channel.com. The overnight lows in the dacks seem to be in the low teens  on accuweather verses the low 20's on weatherchannel.com
Any opinions on which site is more accurate ???

We are soooooooooooooooooooo over due to have early safe ice and for it to last the whole season.

The earliest I have ever fished here in Central, NY was Dec. 6th. That was in 1999.

then next few days and week or so have some ice cold temps, The next five  temperature lows are(staring on today Friday) are: 18 9  12  28, 31 . The highs for the same days are in the low 40's. As we all know it takes a few hours every day to warm up to those temps..almost mid day then it gets dark at 5 ;D

I've got to believe that these North Country temps will give us some us ICE.  Am I wrong ??? All I'm looking for is 3 inch's of ice. Come on

Anybody here fish Meacham Lake in the winter.  I go out with my father in law a few times a summer and catch a few nice pike and a crap load of bass and suckers..  Hows the fishing there in the winter, still good off the beach for the land-locked salmon??

Guys, I'm new on here, at least to the new york part of the db.  I am planning on moving up to the malone area in the next few months and definatly need to find some fishing partners.  My wife loves ice fishing, but not quite as much as I do... :)

I found this on youtube and its a classic.  Make sure you have your speakers on and pay attention to the words.  If this doesn't get the blood flowing I don't know what will...

Talk to you later.

We fished there late last January during the first real cold spell to hit the North Country that season (after some seriously warm weather in late December, early January). It was about -15 when we were out there and we went off the boat launch and saw tracks where people had gone before. The week before we went had some serious sub-zero temperatures going on and on the drive up from the Hudson Valley we saw portable shanties on many lakes in the central and northern 'dacks. We didn't check ice depth when we went out. The wind was brutal and the snow was about a foot deep so we didn't go too far from the boat launch on Meacham. I remember joking to my partner when he was about to turn the auger on and drill the first hole. "Hey, wouldn't it be weird if the ice was only an inch or two thick?" He fired up the auger and began drilling. He broke through right away. The ice was three inches with about a foot of snow on top!! We spent the rest of the day listening to the ice groan and crack. No fish. I used to live in Malone and would venture on down to Meacham. Splake seemed to be a frequent catch. I get the feeling that lake my freeze up slower than some of the others.

bdub, I lived in Malone for three years! I am definitely going back up to hit the hardwater again. Good deer hunting up there. It's kind of a weird town. It's like a frontier town sort of. I miss it.

''Good deer hunting up there. It's kind of a weird town. It's like a frontier town sort of. I miss it.''

Yeah, I'm definatly with you there.  I am actually heading up in 2 weeks to get the last bit of the deer season in.  Got a nice 6 point out there last year.  Besides Meacham, since that's really the only lake up there I've fished, what other places would you reccomend for some good hard water fishing?  I still don't know the area up there that great as we only go up 3-4 times a year.  My sister in law lives in massena and tells me there are some decent sized ponds up there that may be worth a try, but I would hate to take my father in law out for his first time, and not have him see anything...  I'm hoping that the Fishing Challenge in Tupper goes off again this year, I really want to show the in-laws the finer points of ice fishing.  They love hunting and fishing, but they kinda clam up in the winter, I keep telling them there is more to do in the winter than sit around the house waiting for spring... :)

Took the boat up to Schroon lake to see of I could find the Lakers and Salmon. No luck water temps were50 degrees on the main lake. I only found fish on the finder still hugging the bottom in about 100-120 ft of water. I would spot what looked like clouds of bait fish then the bigger fish. When I launched the boat at the southern end the marshy area to the right of the launch had some cone ice and it held for the day. It wont be long if we get some temps to hold at freezing all day for a extended period of time . I figure one or two more times up to the lake then it will be time to ice fish.

After today the temps drop off quite nicely   everywhere in NY it seems. Per http://www.accuweather.com/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=1&zipcode=12983&metric=0, There is a definite trend of low to mid 30's as a high and average lows in the teens.  All that said I extremely hopefull by next Saturday that we might have some ice, preferably 3inch's or more. I am still targeting a trip up north so if anyone lives in the Placid/Saranac lake area please keep us posted on any small ponds freezing over etc.
Peace :afro:

It always seams like accuweather's forcasted lows are 10 degrees lower than what the weather channel says.  Not sure why this is.  Seams like the average between the 2 sites is usually about right.  I hope Accuweather is right this time, because if they are, there might be safe ice to be found by Tuesday...  I'm not holding my breath, but I'll be looking.

I hope it's not that warm :'( Accuweather has high of 44 and a low of 23 for Wednesday.  I know its not an exact science but that average temp is 33.5. That only a few degrees above freezing ???

Whats the deal with the descrepancy between weather.com vs accuweather.com.  Weather.coml is calling for lows of 16 & 23  for sunday & monday. Accuweather is calling for 6 & 8  for the same days. There  seems to be a pretty consistant spread like this all the time ??? ???

Schroon was between 45 and 47 degrees yesterday. It was a beautiful day cool but the sun was shining so it wasn't to bad. My father in-law said Saturday it never got above freezing in Brant and it was 14 degrees overnight. Lakers still sitting on the bottom over a hundred ft of water. Did get beautiful Salmon and one nice laker. Probably over a month off for Schroon unless there is a real big cold snap. According to my records last year I was still fishing Schroon from my boat last January. Hopefully it wont be that late this year. Tight lines.

Rained pretty hard most of the day today but the evening the temps started dropping and we are now at 22f.  If nothing else the cold rain is dropping the temps of the water and should start freezing really good soon.

Yes, these were my first steps on the ice this year. It's still unsafe, but was able to creep 5-10 feet from shore.  After today and tonight's cold, it'll be ready in no time! ;)

The ice is starting to form pretty nicely. The temps on the water is staying below freezing and out from shore about 50 feet except where there is some wind and current.  I know everybody is anxious to get out there and do some fishing, but remember it is still early and conditions can change from place to place fot to foot.
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL

Are you saying that you were ice fishing recently....on 3.5-5 inch's of ice ??? I'm guessing if the answer is yes that it had to have been in the Adks. You don't need to tell me exactly where but it would certainly help me know some basics so that I can confirm my hotel reservation in the Adks for this weekend ;D

Definitely not around the Tupper Lake area.  Temps didn't get really warm today but there is no way 3-5" of ice around here even on the smaller ponds.  Lots of rain tonight with temps still in the mid 30's

Made the trip to Malone today and this is what I found.

Tupper Lake has some ice out from the shore line about 50 yds except in the big lake.

Middle Saranac has some ice in the sheltered bays but the main lake is still open.

Fish Creek area has some ice but lots of open spots.

Barnum Pond is completely frozen over.  Problem is it's trout pond and no ice fishing.

Mecham Lake has some ice in the bays but lots of open water.

I believe it's real action from the 11/26/07 date claimed. It looks like Adirondack Lake to me. That place is certainly small enough to be one of the first frozen, and has a good pike population.

We only got 1 inch so far of snow here in Saranac Lake.  Here, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake are the only schools in the area I know of that did not cancel school today.  Hopefully we keep missing the heavy snow, esp since most spots now have a skim on them from Saturday night's 0 degree low.  7 inches of snow on 1 inch of ice would be a VERY bad thing.

about 3 or 4 inches of snow here in Ti hoping we miss round 2 tonight.  The snow does suck however, Wish it could have held off for 2 weeks to lock up the small guys,  but hey this is better than 60 degrees in January like it was last year.  Fishing before Christmas haven't done that in a while.
