Fishing, hunting, outdoors books recommendations
« on: Jan 22, 2024, 04:52 PM »
I’m looking into getting a new read. Wondering what books you folks may have read that you would recommend?  I really liked North to Cree Lake.”  Would want something Canada based if possible. Thanks.
Get outside.  It does a body and mind good!

North to Cree lake is a great read!  I just got the Olaf Hanson book about the hanson lake road.
https://www.amazon.ca/Northern-Rover-Life-Story-Hanson/dp/1897425015/ref=asc_df_1897425015/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292914864714&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11850734657473920184&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1002791&hvtargid=pla-496596432612&psc=1&mcid=761129e4ec4d3d27856437a4db0b0a77

Really looking forward to that one.  Yukon Alone by John Balzar is a good one, too.  Not 100% an outdoors book but I really liked through black spruce and three day road by Joseph Boyden.

There are numerous outdoorsy type books with very funny short stories written by Patrick McManus. He used to write for Outdoor Life, I believe, and also Readers Digest. You can find these on Amazon or in bookstores. I always got a good laugh out of these.

I have read the Olaf Hanson book, very interesting read. Fascinating to hear stories and history from the Hanson Lake road area. I enjoyed it a lot.

Face the North Wind by A.L.Karras the same author who wrote North to Cree Lake. The Mad Trapper from Rat River by Dick North is a good read as well.

Hah, good memories!  I remember my dad showing me one of his books when I was probably 10 years old.  Our local library had a handful of them, I must have checked them all out and read them 5 times over.  Hysterical stories!

All of Steven Rinella's books.  Also, if you are into turkey hunting; Tenth Legion by Tom Kelly.

A couple of vintage authors would include Robert Ruark and Gordon MacQuarrie. Ruark's "Old Man and the Boy" is a masterpiece of outdoor writing. MacQuarrie's stories about The Old Duck Hunters' Association are hilarious. Both writers are American, but the themes and settings are relatable to this part of the world.

Couple more local options include Marchildon and Robinson's "Canoeing the Churchill" and David Carpenter's "A Hunter's Confession".
