Got up this morning and the lake had about 40' of shelf along shore.
-
Nice! I thought my lake had ice on in this mourning. Sadly, it was just steam.
-
Temps looking good after Friday.

Making ice now. Hope the snow doesn't kill it.
-
or the 40s and rain next week....
-
I'm hoping we get a little window on some smaller shallow lakes sometime Monday -thursday before the forecasted warm up... All is gonna depend on if there are any lakes strong enough to hold up to the snow load and wind.... I know, wishful thinking... But it's gonna be cold enough to firm up some slush if any lakes do hold through
-
Fortunately none of the lakes over here in the SW had no ice. After the storm, cold weather coming. Should be good by the 1st.

Lol. Skinny old fart? Yup. Being in shape? Not even close. I might need you to pull me out on the ice. I'll drill the holes...you just get us there.
-
Lol you would run circles around my a$$ out there.thats a compliment being im 20 or more years younger .i did slim down to 285lbs but im absolutely not doing 3" of ice anymore.lol

How is ssdave doing? Haven’t seen him post or heard from him
-
Hes around.we fish for steelhead here and there.his life schedule is packed.
-
Ok 👍 he needs to do some unpacking lol
-
I will get the spud out tomorrow (Saturday) and punch a hole. The wind is keeping the lake snow free.
-
I'll be punching some smaller lakes tomorrow as well. Devils had some open holes in the deep areas. Protected areas near launch will probably be fishable soon
-
There are 4 inches of ice here. And some BRUTAL wind.
-
I also had 4 inches. Didn't fish or check whole lake. Small 60 acre lake. Will fish Monday

Happy New Year everyone. I hope the ice returns
-
I have not been out but is all ice gone yet Doubt it's going to make it
-
The ice looks terrible in the Irish Hills area. I would not trust it.
-
Example: If the low temperature today was 24 degrees and the high was 30 degrees, the average temperature of the day was 27 degrees. Subtract that from 32, and you get 5 freezing degree days for this day.
2. Based on studies, once a thin layer of ice film forms on a lake, it will add 1 inch of ice for every 15 freezing degree days in a 24 hour period.
Example: If we had a day with 5 freezing degree days, you would use the formula 5/15 = .33. On this day you would add .33 inches of ice, or 1/3 of an inch. But remember, this is after the first layer of ice forms.
This shows how long it can take a lake to freeze, even after a cold day.
The Four-Inch Rule
Most agree a lake needs to have at least a 4 inch layer of ice on top for it to be safe to play on. You can use the freezing degree day calculations to estimate when that would happen, but those are only estimates. The amount of sunshine or wind on the lake, the depth of the lake and the source of the lake’s water all can impact how fast its ice thickens.
The only safe way to tell is to drill a small hole into the lake to measure the ice or wait for local officials to tell you it is safe.
Unfortunately, people and animals die every year by walking on frozen lakes where the ice is too thin.
-
I have never heard of local officials telling people the ice is safe
-
I see open water I'm afraid. Hope I didn't miss the season.
-
Not sure but might be over the next couple of weeks are critical I might go north

I never call it till mid February, we still have time. But heading north for now is always good for a fix.
Just get all your gear ready to go and have your work sick line on speed dial
-
In 2020, we didn't start fishing here until February 9th.
-
Yea I do remember that I did dry January and cut it short a day because we were able to get on the ice here in Livingston the last day of the month 🤣🤙🍻
-
Next week looks like there may be some hope for lower Michigan.
-
My little lake is locked up today. There was a lot of open water yesterday. I saw 4 or 5 guys out on Crispell Lake yesterday.
-
4.5 inches at my dock this morning. Looks skinnier out further.
-
Got out but it was super slow.

Same over here on the west side. Managed 3 nice Perch, 1 Gill and 1 small LM. These sunny days suck for fishing. All the fish marked were pinned to the bottom and wouldn't come up.
-
I took a little ride today. I didn't see ANYBODY golfing! :)
-
The fat lady is singing. Ordered some leaders for the flyrods today.
-
Do any of the smaller lakes in the Irish Hills have safe ice?
-
I doubt it. The small lake I'm on is losing ice fast. A large pond we fish is not fish able. The edges are gone .
-
I assume Wamplers edges have deteriorated.
-
Ain't no way
