Older Clam Plate and Older Drill
« on: Feb 12, 2018, 12:37 PM »
Does anyone still use the older clam plate that you need to take the the chuck off for? Also, does anyone use the older dewalt 18v NiCad battery drills with them? Just wondering how they work together. Thanks in advance for the input.

I can't comment about the plate, but when I had porter -cable ni cads, they weren't very good.
I sold them and went to lithium.

I know there are a lot of people running the older Clam plate. Don't know what drills they are using with them though.

The older Clam Plates will work with most drills except for the new Milwaukee drills as they changed the output shaft size from 1/2" to 9/16 I believe . Most 18 volt drills will work to some degree w/6" auger drill unit ...but advancements in batteries ...brushless motors...torque...etc has changed the game for battery operated auger units..making older drills inferior/obsolete...You could do some modifications to allow use of a drill w/o chuck removal ...by making an adapter and adding some height to the upright drill handle bracket

this may help with the power aspects of your older drill

Last year Clam made a bunch of ClamPlate shafts that were tapped out for the newer Milwaukee with the 9/16-18 thread. They charged from $0 to $5 (delivered) depending on the mood of the customer service person. In my mind the older version of the clam plate is the best of all. Chucks are used on drills that are constantly being changed. Any cutting tool that stays on a machining spindle is held in a collet or equivalent. Sooner than later your chuck is going to loosen up and mangle the soft shaft on your ClamPlate.

I have both styles. on the old one where you take the chuck off I have a Dewalt 995 and on my new style ones I run the Dewalt 996. old style is set up with a 5 inch lazer auger and the two new style ones have a 6 inch lazer and 8 in lazer (with the gear box). have been temped to sell the old style one but haven't yet. run the extension on all them too.
