Hi guys,
I was wondering if any of you have ever caught an inconnu while ice fishing?
If so, how many have you found and any big ones.
Any pictures? ???
I saw them a few times on a regular fishing shows up in the arctic and though they were a neat mysterious fish.
I then wondered if they are also caught through the ice, so I had to ask. :)

They are only in 5 watersheds in the world so are pretty rare when is all said and done.
Luckily there is a population in Great Slave Lake. :)
I have been trying to figure them out with no success at this point.
They are caught in the nets pretty regularly though.
Once I catch one I hope to be able to figure them out but I have no idea what kind of structure they like.
I have caught them North of here during open water and they are fun to catch.
The guys in Alaska do well through the sea ice in Kotzebue off the river mouth at this time of year.
Here's a pic of my buddy Chris with one he caught last spring. :D

Just a baby. In that area the WR was caught.
it weighed in at 53#'s.
Don't know how big Chris' fish was.
-
We catch em nearly every cast in the fall but that's it's in the river... They don't make it into Lac La Martre because of the giant water falls.
They will eat just about anything in the fall. We catch em on big spoons in the rapids

Cool, thanks for posting a pict of one though the ice, Drifter_016. Very neat looking fish indeed. @)
I can see that they are related to whitefish, there appearance is similar.

That is its own oil you see it in.
The largest I have seen was caught in a net in Teslin Lake. It weighed 67 pounds! Hougen's Sportslodge had it mounted, and it was on display here until about 15 years ago. I know guys who have caught them on fishing tackle up to fifty pounds. They are amazing fighting fish.

Nice Ted
Haven't got one through the ice yet.
Maybe some time.
Gonna hit the ice this weekend I think. :D
-
WOW, that first pic, it look a bit like a Silver Snook...
-
Hey Ted, you're out early, is that from this season?? I got the first of the year on monday. About 9lbs. The ones up here in the delta aren't that oily, they are quite dry when you bake them. Seed mustard, honey and dill rub is the ticket!

I know it's totally different but I've heard of a lot of them being caught in the open water here on GSL this last summer. They are definitely moving into the Yellowknife area as I started getting them in my nets this last summer. I've haven't caught one in the summer (I only fish one specific spot) in 8 years of commercial fishing.
We have been getting more and more every winter for the last 4 years. Their belly's are always full of sticklebacks in the winter, so I would imagine that would be a good bait to imitate.
Tight lines!
-
Guys are slaying them right now, if I had a skidoo I wouldn't be posting this, I'd be fishing instead!
Another from last winter.

And a toad from the delta, on the fly rod, 25ish lbs

Inconnu look like a neat fish. What sort of depths are you getting them at?
-
Up here we're a bit different because of the delta. Icefishing in the delta, less than 3 feet usually. They congregate at creek mouths after ice on to feed on baitfish migrating out of lakes. In lakes, usually deep but it depends on where the baitfish are. In the delta in summer usually on the surface or near it, surface poppers on the flyrod are killer. The one im releasing in that pic was caught in about a foot of water. Ive watched them turn sideways to eat under the ice. Crazy fish.
-
That is really neat. Thanks for sharing. I will be moving to the Yukon in the next few months and look forward to targeting some different fish species.
-
You guys have been finding some dandy big inconnu, way to go everyone.
They look like a blast to catch and eat. :)
Man, 1-2 feet, that pretty shallow.
When catching fish that shallow there is no way for them to go but out. They are always a good fight. :woot:
I have caught an odd pike that shallow also.

Hey Eastbranch. I'm also in inuvik. Moved up from Sask a while ago. I've been out for burbot and coney a few times in the delta. Looking to expand my ice fishing horizons in the area. We should get together. I've been thinking of heading to Noell or Jimmy for some lakers soon. Or somewhere else in the area. Talk to ya later.
-
We went out in the delta today for a few hours. Caught a bunch of coney around 10# range and a couple 20 to 25, barely made it through the 8 inch holes. Couple small pike too. Overall a good day.
-
Nice dude. Where abouts? I don't fish the delta after Nov usually.
-
Not entirely sure where, it was about halfway to Aklavik then off into a side channel. Where do u usually go after nov? I was thinking of trying Noell, jimmy or sitigdgi?
-
That is really neat. Thanks for sharing. I will be moving to the Yukon in the next few months and look forward to targeting some different fish species.
Give me a shout when you get here. We'll try and keep you out of the tourist traps. ;D
