Cot for Camping on the Ice
« on: Oct 28, 2019, 05:34 PM »
Looking for some suggestions from anyone with first hand experience. I have slept on a cot or two but I have never owned one. I am currently looking a the slumberjack big cot. I am 6’5” 250lbs so I need a good sized cot to be comfortable. This will be used for more than just camping on the ice but this usually a great source for all things outdoors.

We really like our Disc-O-Bed Cam-O-Cot bunkbed cot.  Here is a pic of it in our QF6 (refresh page if image not shown below):

400-lb. capacity per level.  My son and I are both 6'5" and it fits us OK.  He sometimes wishes for an extra inch, but I don't.

We got a size L to preserve more floor space, but you could do the XL.  They make a footpad set to go on the bottom, which helps keep it from sinking into the snow/ice.  I also recommend the post extensions to get a little extra room between the levels.

I have a Slumberjack Big Cot that I use when going camping without a partner, but I haven't used it in the winter.  It is a great cot I don't think you will be sorry.  I have used it for a long time, like 10-15 years.

We have a great camping-on-the-ice thread going.  When you make it out camping on the ice, it would be great to get some input from you there.

I used a cot I got at Dicks last year for about 50 bucks. Seemed a lot like this one: https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/texsport-deluxe-folding-camp-cot-16texudlxfldngcmpcsl/16texudlxfldngcmpcsl

I use a big closed cell foam thermarest style on top of it. It fit tight in my Clam X200 flip and it's a big shanty. Half in and half out of the sled like this:

I camped in it about 5 nights last season, it worked well but was a lot of work to set up and just took up too much space in my house. So this year I made a bunk in my X200. See my post here: https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=370893.0

I can't wait to camp in it this season!
Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

I've got a Woods brand cot I use at the cabin and when I go camping.
Works great.

I use one of those lounge type folding chair/cot contraption.  Much wider and more comfortable than the old camping cot.  Use to also brought the wool blanket military standard issue, but not any more.

FG Steve beat me to it.  :P
I'm the 6'5" 250 lb son and I can confirm that the Disc-O-Bed Cam-O-Cot is great.
Around here, (Utah) Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse will usually have one on the floor that you can go lay on and see if you need the XL or not.

Thanks for directing me to this! I like the idea of a yearly trip and how you give great detail every year!
