what did you upgrade from, if i may ask?
i watched one in action the other day. had a slow pace and some odd noise, but did the job it was meant to do. must of had some age to it making that odd noise tho. almost like a dry gear box sound.
first time on that lake i had seen one or any lake.

i remember going from hand auger to drill power and it was a blast. just wanted to make holes because it was almost as fun as fishing them.

I have the new strikemaster lithium, and these next gen electric augers are pretty sweet.   I don't care for the blades on the ion, but folks like the augers, more power to them.   You won't regret your purchase.

I have a couple buddies with them and they have sold their gas augers now. Both hole hop and have perm shacks they love the no fumes and reverse for cleaning holes. Should be good!

I bought one this year must have the only lemon.if I don't have to drill over15 holes very much like it just can't get many holes out of it. Like not spilling gas and flooding on cold days!!!

I love mine. Just keep the battery warm if you can. When im not using it, I either put it in the shack or in my coat pocket. It will dog down if it gets really cold.

I cut 40 holes in 10"+ ice and the battery indicator was still on full. I'm guessing you got a faulty battery.

I store my battery in a small canvas bag with a handwarmer. Seems to do the job of keeping it warm enough.

Yeah, they are pretty sweet. So quiet all you hear is the blade cutting through the ice. It's funny, it's so quiet that the "noisy" part is when the blade actually cuts ice. You don't hear a motor at all.

my only problem and the reason i didn't get one is because of the $150 replacement battery if you ever need it.

Purchased an ion last winter and allowed four trusted friends to use it - all four purchased one shortly and the fifth person waited too long and heard "sorry were sold out"
I don't often go out when temps are down to zero or below but do try to set the ion down so the battery isnt buried in snow or laying on the ice... Never had a problem to this day and last year we were dealing with ice 20 inches thick.  Would do it again in a heart beat.

My new Ion arrived yesterday.  Spent the day on the ice (7hrs).  Auger was great.  I purposely let the battery sit on the ice all day.  It was slow to cut holes at the end of the day but should be no problem if the keep the battery warm instructions are followed.

Second year with mine, and I love it! Carry it in a car or a jeep with no stink or gas spills. Cuts like a champ. I was getting fifty+ holes in 18-22 inches of ice last year and never killed a battery. Always kept it in a pocket or covered by a coat. Not this year though. Its been getting used hard and till no complaints.

Just a question for the Ion owners out there: What is the advantage of the reverse on the 8 inch? Thanks... :icefish:

Not a clue, all I know is it's the nuts when used on forward...

Run it in reverse for a couple of seconds after you've punched through.  Sends all of the shaved ice back down the hole and scatters it away from the hole.
Or, if you really wanted to, you could rig up a way to use a Jiffy auger on the Ion power unit.  ??? ???

There's another use of the reverse feature, they make an adapter to screw in ice screws for securing shelters, use reverse to back them out at the end of the day.

I adapted my Strikemaster hand auger last year for use with a drill, and it worked great, but the 7" auger eats batteries quickly.
I came across a good deal this summer on an Eskimo that was made in the early 70s,and though it is a bit heavy,I figured for the amount I fish I could get along with it!
After using it on a couple of outings,I was eying up other guys augers to see what they used, and saw a great variation, including propane, and electric.
Well  my mind was made up for me on Saturday,at a derby in Maine, when I won one in a raffle!
Have not tried it out yet,but I am now the proud owner of a Jiffy Propane auger!
5.00 well spent on a raffle ticket that benefits Charity!
Might have to brave the messy roads and go try it out today!
Already have the old Eskimo spoken for on Craig's List for what I paid for it!
Take your kids hunting and fishing!

I've had mine about a month now and love it. Been leaving the battery out in zero to 10 below and still no problems even without a recharge for days.
