It was iffy last weekend and weds when I was out there.  Fish were being taken some walleye up to 9 lbs.  This time of the year or really any time on Erie you have to watch the offshore(south ) wind. That is what happened to these guys......there was a small crack 50 or so yards offshore and when the south wind we are getting caught it................pop your goin' for an ice ride.  Sounds like from the news and reports I've gotten everyone should be safely rescued.  This will be the talk for days regarding how stupid we ice fisherman are.  Not good press to say the least. Hate to say but it happens every year around here.  Probably the only good thing is that it happened today on a Friday and not tomorrow with about 100-200 more guys out there.  By the way if you have a boat I know of a good place to scavenge some gear.(sorry that was'nt funny)

Do these fishermen drive on the ice? Are there pickups and 4 wheelers on the ice too?

Its almost a yearly occurrence on Western Lake Erie.  I'd never go a mile out when there's a strong wind from the East or South.

It happens on Erie's Michigan shoreline around Monroe.  I never saw that many either.  The Buckeyes have everyone beat.

This happened on Lake Michigan about ten or more years ago. HUGE floe came loose. Lots of the guys fishing didn't want to be rescued 'cause the fish were hittin' like crazy and the guys didn't want to leave their gear either. This drove the Coast Guard nuts and gave Ice Fishermen a bad(?) name.
That's when my idea of a large portable ice floe kicked in. I just thought this Lake Erie thing was someone else testing my invention.
I believe everyone's ok though, and it's too bad about their gear and vehicles. Mayhap if a group of folks are gonna go out that far when the wind's blowin' in the wrong direction they should anchor the ice to shore with a stout lenghth of rope,(well, it could happen).
This all gives rise to my next invention. ATVs with 'Floatation' tires.
All folks follow Chainsaws first law of diminishing enthusiasm, "Ya just hafta want to do some things more than others."

Story has it that an operator at Simcoe (who will go unnamed here) has, on occasion, taken guys out in his Kevlar airboat and put them on ice flows to fish the late season bite. Seems a little wacky to me!

Same thing happens in Europe as well,  I read a story every year of a rescue on the Baltic Sea of Russians floating away on a piece of ice and getting rescued.    It's like a clock work over there,  they must enjoy the chopper ride       J.
