Title: Jackson Res
Post by: GreyGoos on Feb 01, 2018, 06:03 PM
Seeking information: I hit a great bite last fall at Jackson Res and caught multiple quality walleye (2-5lbs) and was thinking about trying to get after them through the ice. Just wondering if anyone has been out there recently and if the ice was safe (4+ inches). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Not asking where to go & what to use, just asking if the ice is fishable.  ???

Tried it about 2 weeks ago, 11” of quality clear slippery ice at the outlet. Fishing was slow, one crappie every 3 hours. I am Considering trying again this weekend.

Excellent! Thanks for the info! I was going to try the evening, either Friday or Saturday. Always had better luck on the walleye in the evening up to 2 hours after sundown. Can't go Sunday, I have to regulate the sky carp population before season is over.

So as far as jiggin walleyez, never done it in colorado.  Do you guys tip with minnow heads or tails or whole minnows.. or not at all??  Ive jigged walleyes in NY and every one uses pieces of fatheads or other tiny minners.  Since we have a prohibition on live bait here in the high country I dont know  what you guys do down on the front range, can a guy even buy minnows??  Thinking  about heading down to the plains for walleye early next week.  The CPW most recent dip net of jackson shows good numbers of 15" fish...Fish an evening bite, get a hotel, fish the morning bite.. head home

I tried a chubby darter and had multiple rejections. Switched up to a slender spoon tipped with a minnow head & game on....  Jax in Lafayette usually has minnows & I think Bass Pro in Stapleton has minnows as well. There are regulations about not using live minnows in the mountain lakes, but totally ok out on the plains lakes.

Thanks greatly for the info!  Was just looking online for a contour map, couldnt find one to be purchased.  Is the lake just a big bowl?? Whats the depth in the middle?

Do you guys rip blade baits? They work quite well at dusk. And jigging raps.

^ This is all you need.  Naked heavy metal, baby!  ;D

But if you must:
-BPS no longer sells minnows.
-Valley Country near the Crack sells them.
-Cabela's sells them.
-JAX shops are the best options for large shiners.
-Petsmart often has small minnows.

Tim, what evening you going?...

Looking at sunday afternoon. Calm W and SW winds sunday/monday.  Suppose to shift to east wind tuesday and i wont drive 4 hours to fish an east wind.  My one and only superstition.  Prob gonna bring my LED lantern and fish til 7pm or so.  Stay at a cheap hotey Ft Morgan or Brush, fish monday morning for a few.  Wont even have to get up early ;D

Yes, the lake is a big bowl. Deepest is ~20’, but I was fishing 8-10 FOW & marking plenty of fish. Bite was quick, about 45 minutes . Best time was about sundown. Good luck!

Can't go Sunday, I have to regulate the sky carp population before season is over.

Did you regulate the sky carp population on Sunday? Freakin amazing how many are out there, sounds like WW3 every time I’m out there.  I bird hunt a lot in the fall, but my new Gsp pup’s ears turn off when his nose turns on. He spent a night in Yuma county when he ran off and didn’t come back. I was blessed to find him the next day when I was posting lost dog signs. Didn’t hunt him anymore, won’t till his ears turn on.

Yea, tried many presentations, Jiggin was most effective but also caught fish on live and dead bait.

Ice still 7-11” and snow layer completely melted so cleats are needed. Brutally slow yesterday, only one small wiper, didn’t mark much either.
