Using perch for Lakers?
« on: Jan 15, 2015, 11:37 AM »
Has anyone had any luck using whole, small, perch for lakers or maybe tiping a jig with a strip of perch?  I caught a bunch of small perch and I was wondering if they would make good laker bait.  There are a few perch in the Laker lake but not many.

How small is small? Lakers do eat perch. Buddy of mine had a laker chase a perch he hooked right into the hole. He got the laker, and it never touched the perch.

Perch or any panfish make good cut bait for lakers.  Scale them and cut into the size  and shape you like.  I have some small crappies and bluegills set aside from yesterday's trip; now I need good ice on Superior.

Make sure it's legal in your state, and if so definitely try it.  Not legal in Maine, otherwise I would use perch here.  Everything eats perch, including lakers.  I think that's part of why glow perch or firetiger jigging spoons seem to work so well.  Also great bait for open water too if legal.

Like stated before we can't use a live Perch as bait here in Maine but cut Perch does work for Lakers. They eat perch in all ponds that they co-exist together so it is a natural food source for them.

Yeah our state law now says dead or alive, all baitfish must be on the allowed list. For those that can use perch legally, I liked this video and it seems so simple. I'm going do the same with sucker meat.
