Title: Alternate baits for walleye
Post by: Water Wolf on Jan 13, 2007, 02:54 PM
We all know that a person can usually catch walleyes on minnows/shiners, waxworms, grubs, maggots and earth worms and the scented lures but what alternative baits { ex. organ meats, bacon, power dough, hot dogs etc.} have you caught your walleye on?

I have tried smelt as an alternative but at least in my area walleye don't like them, must be too oily or something. :-\

I've caught a 22" walleye on a 10" believer before trolling for muskies.  That was strange.
Also caught one on a hellgrammite

I was shown a trick up north . A guy cut out the gullet of a walleye and used it all day . Caught as many fish as we did. :o

All of these tricks work really well...I mentioned the perch and walleye eyes, or strips of belly cut to look like minnows,
or the gut.  They work, and they save a bit on buying bait...and if a person runs out of bait out on the ice, it is a good substitute.
The only problem is that my daughter gets finicky about finding a baggie of eyeballs in the fridge.
