Well that was a first.... and hopefully the last
« on: Jan 20, 2013, 08:50 AM »
Yesterday my step dad and I were fishing and as we look around looking over our traps, we notice of course, no flags are up.... but even worse, a flag is missing. We went over to investigate and sure enough, the trap was GONE! A fish had finagled it and brought it with it under the ice! Didn't think that would ever happen, but oh well! Can't do anything but laugh! This ever happened to any of you!?

Can't say I've ever seen that happen before. What kind of trap was it?

It was a brand new tip-up my step dad bought. Only thing I can think is it some how slid in...

What type of trap; Cross, dog bone, wind, Magnetic pop up, the type that covers a hole? Also, how big was the hole and how big was the tipup?

Can happen pretty easy with a Polar Tipup in a ten inch hole

Never use a big hole. You can pull a 20#er through an 8".
Most people  should never need it any bigger than 6" I've seen their catches. ::)

Had that happen with a polar tip up a few years back. Luckily it was in only 6 feet of water. Jigged the trap up and still caught the bass that pulled the trap in.

Never had that happen.I did see a trap slide to the side of the hole cause the line got wrapped around the trap, didnt trip flag. I drill 10" holes but have heritage laker traps.

my brother could set traps out in a field and get just as many flags as he does on the lake... no need for holes  ;D ;D ;D

if it was a polar tip up though... i wouldnt be surprised.

I once watched a buddy's 40-up "fold" up like an umbrella and drop out of sight through the hole. Either the line got wrapped around the spool shaft or the pike ran out all the line. Either way, it pulled it right through. We still laugh about it.

My buddy lost one throught the hole last year at Sandy Pond, the fish actually got the line wrapped around an adjacent tip up and we caught both the tip up and the 24 inch pike about 5 hours later.
Mark it 8 dude

Years ago on the last day of the season, I lost a trap down a drain hole, in about 45 ft of water.  I tried to jig it back with no luck.  Not the following summer, but the summer after that my Grandfather was trolling Lead Line out in his secret spot, and snagged my Tip Up! (2 years later!)    :o
It was Blackened on one side from laying in the muck, and it had noticeably less use then the other 4 in the set!  Cool!  ;D

Saw it happen to a guy out on the ice last year. Luckily he was able to jig up part of the line and pull it all in by hand haha

I bought a 9" Jiffy, just because you could slid a Polar trap all the way to the side without it fitting down. That and you still have a bit of room for the hole to close during the day. We had a big blow and the second year I used the polars I stepped on one in a drift.  The spool side of the broken frame went down! 7" of ice they get right around the corner, them polar traps!

I fish with heritage traps and have never even came close to loosing one down a hole. Even with a warm day and the water draining down the hole making it rather large. But the reels have started to loosen up in the upright (found out the hard way when I was chipping the ice off my trap at the end of a trip and the reel popped off and actually went in the hole, luckily my cat like reflexes kicked in and I went elbow deep in the hole to save the reel). Easy fix- pull all the reels off my 15+ yr old traps and gorilla glue the stud in there. Couldn't pull them out now with a mack truck or hopefully a large togue or salmon.

Last weekend I got a flag and as soon as it popped it apparently slid down into the packed up position because I didn't see it until the trap started bouncing up and down.  The fish completely spooled the trap and by the time I ran over had broken the line.

I bet the trap actually blew out of the hole and down the lake the way yesterday's winds were.
