What are your 3 favorite crappie lures?
« on: Dec 06, 2018, 05:43 AM »
In order, what are your 3 favorite crappie lures and what (if any) plastics do you use with them?

Crappie are a recent occurance in our area, not much experience with them as you guys south of the border have, so I am making a 7 hour drive tomorrow to the Fargo fishing show, hoping to find a selection of crappie lures to bring back. I would appreciate any input.

Slender spoon, Swedish pimple, jigging rap...I tip the spoons with a minnow head...  the slender spoons are killers on them around here.... you could keep it simple with a bobber, sinker, hook, and live minnow ...

PK Spoons, no bait, go for the agressive fish!  Use different colors till you hit the magic one.  I like the Bengal Tiger Glow best.

Replace the stock treble with one of these.

I really only have 2 baits I use for crappies, a 4mm or 5mm tungsten with a 1.5in plastic tipped with a spike or a 1/16oz slender spoon with the treble hook replaced by a Shrimpo jig/tail tipped with a spike

Finicky bite: 4-5mm tungsten with buggy looking plastic or spikes.

Kastmaster jigging spoon, really small. Tipped with minnow head or spikes.

Hot bite/looking for bigger fish: Slab rap in the smaller size.

I don't really target them anymore, but when I did I just used a plain old Aberdeen gold hook size 8 and a minnow. Worked well for me.

I have used most of the above and am a jigging nut, but on a lake that is filled with nice crappie a dead stick with no. 8  horizontal jig and a fat head usually out fishes my beat jigging efforts. Just sayin...

I do remember in the past I would use a #12 treble hooked through both lips of the minnow, a split shot just heavy enough to get the minnie down under a float bobber. Worked quite well.

I have not tried hooking a minnow through the lips for ice fishing, would expect to lose a lot of minnows this way.  That is not an issue?

I actually put it through the bottom lip and more through the middle of the nose. If it goes through the nostril it will fall off...gotta be right in the middle. Also if you have a jig that sits more horizontal than vertical, you have to make sure your minnow ends up right side up.

Forage minnow with a full minnow on it. Works well with parts of minnows as well.

Works wonders in central ontario. I like to drop it to the bottom and then hover 1-2 feet above the weeds. When they are active I slowly jig and reel the lure back in. I've seen time and time again hesitant crappie coming out of the weeds and smashing my lure on the way back up.

I like to start with just a red drop jig with either a chartreuse jami plastic or eurolarva. second choice is either a pinhead or jointed pinhead minnow with euros on it. third is a panfish leech flutter spoon. I do plan to try some of the tikka minnows this winter sometime to see how I like that type of lure. not really a lure but there is times and situations where I like to fish with a plain glow hook under a venom bobber using crappie minnows.

caught the most on northland forage fry glow with minnow(most of my crappie fishings at night with lite).

second would be tiny jig and plastic. bobby garland baby shad glow green. or a purpe puddle jumper plastic

then either a flash lure or jiggin rap.

Whatever is working. I have had success with red but sometimes not. I have lots of baits and just cycle thru them to find what they will bite.

Depends on how active you want your minnow to be, if you want it to swim and move alot - usually have the shot weight about 12".  If I want the minnow to stay put under my bobber, then I move the weight to the jig closer - about 3".  Anything between there is an experiment and will change depending on how the crappie are biting.
