Well what knots do you guys use to tie your swivel on one end and hook on the other end as a leader? I tried tying some last night. Did not turn out well. New to using Seaguar Blue Label 40lb fluorocarbon.
-
Ive never used any knot other than a clinch knot. I use 30lb co-polymer P-line and this knot has never failed in the 20 plus years using it..
-
Used to use the Palomar on everything, but recently started using the nanofil knot for 4 pound and lighter - it's a Palomar with one additional "overhand" run through the loop for lack of a better way to describe it. Only issue is you need to tie your leader to the swivel first, then tie the swivel to the main line. Once the leader is connected I tie my hook/jig/lure/etc. on.
-
Clinch knot or improved clinch knot for anythig over 8lb just make sure to wet your line when pulling any knot tight
-
You can still tie a clinch knot but maybe only 3 or 4 wraps. 40 lb is really the borderline for tying. You could always try crimping if you are using single hooks you could snell.

The Pros & Cons of many knots are (were HERE, but now the link is gone, due to lack of interest).
-
I just crimp my leaders, 40#-80#.
-
40# floro knots are a bear, I use a vise, pliers, & lube. Like the other guys said, borderline.
-
What kind of fish are yall fishing for with using 40# plus line ?
-
With 60 and 80lb floro I run the line through the eye of the hook and tie a simple loop knot. I've never had the knot slip though I have had a handful of breakoffs over the years, all above the knot. Be careful with crimps, they're great for open water but I've seen them slip several times on the ice. I think the crimps slip because when you pack up at the end of the day and throw your tipups in the sled the water in the crimp freezes and expands the crimp, then it can slip on the next trip.

Fresh water sharks!! ;D

Simple is better: Palomar or Uni, use plenty of lubrication snugging up. Works great for me up to about 40#.
After that I'm a crimp guy. EZPZ, no slipping issues with the right sleeves, crimper and procedure. Millions of saltwater connections can't lie.

I make leaders for pike and musky. My mainline in summer is 65# braid or 20# mono. 80# is probably light for musky, but I haven't had any issues.

Ohhhh , well yah thats good for trolling or casting in the open water for Muskies.. Its a completely different animal than Pike through the ice. 😀

Yeah, but I still made up some quick strike rigs for ice fishing with 40&50# fluoro. Worked well for me and I think fluoro gives you an advantage over wire.

Ahhh ok gotcha !

I use the uni-knot for just about everything. It never fails. Uni-snell on the hook first then uni-knot to the swivel. I use uni-to-uni to splice lines. I use 50# fluorocarbon for pike rigs and with 40-50# you can only really get 3 wraps, but that's plenty if you tie the knot well and cinch it down tight with some spit.

I am using #30 fluor with a uni. Never an issue

Palmar for me and I have land Bluefin tuna over 130lbs on 80lb Fluoro... If you watch the video you can see I put a lot of pressure on the fish (landed in 25 min.)... I knew my knots would hold!

Palomar all the way on everything I tie

I use the improved clinch knot with one extra step, I wrap the line around the eye twice on the hook, swivel, or barrel. Then proceed to the clinch knot never had a issue with breaking the knot but i have straightened out a treble hook on a jigging spoon.
