"Almost" Lost Another One... lol
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 04:53 PM »
Cell phone that is  ::)

I've got a bad habit of losing or breaking cell phones... whether at work (commercial construction) or fishing, I go through at least one or two a year. Good thing for insurance ;)
I do have an underwater and digital camera, but these days its easier/quicker for me to load pics from a cell phone. I was taking the video I posted below and you will notice where I almost lost another one! lol

As far as the fishing went, We had a pretty good day. My buddy Yvan and his wife are off to Florida for 2 months so this was his last ice trip with me for the season.
We got to the lake at sunrise and were set up shortly after. I also got to try a couple new toys I got for Christmas. A couple Jaw Jackers and the ice fishing conversion kit to my fish finder (Lowrance Elite 5). Both worked very well and the day produced 5 Rainbows for me between 16-18.5"  Yvan struggled a bit and went 1 for 4. He said he didn't mind though because as of next week he will be fishing for two months in shorts.

Got a couple for Christmas Steve. They worked pretty well. Caught 3 on them and the other two on a tip up. I have a few home-made slammers I made a few years ago but the jack jackers fold up small and fit in a pack basket pretty easily. Always fun to try something different.

Glad to see you got out with your buddy Keith. I know you have a busy schedule so I'm sure that meant a lot to both of you. Way to get it done out there. Beautiful fish as always!

Nice job!  I've never heard of Jaw Jackers before.  I like how they break down to the size of a large tip-up...

Enjoyed the video.

Glad the fish are not making duck faces and snapping selfies with your phone.  ;D

Very sportsmanlike release of that fish!

Great jobs guys. I've almost dumped the phone a few times down the hole on purpose. Yven 2 months in Florida brings us to March 7. I think this will not be your last ice fishing trip this year. Better practice while you are down there. Have fun.

Cool video and quick release

Meatandmetal threatened blackmail pictures when I used the same technique to cut the line on a brookie I was releasing...something about getting way to close to my fish..... and I will not get into the rest since this is a family site  :o

Thanks for the comments guys.

Nosaj, That's funny about kissing the fish. Lol Yvan asked the same thing. I usually have a pair of needle nose or forceps on me but had let Yvan borrow them and they were on the other end of our set up.. so I just cut the line short when I couldn't get the hook out easily.

To the guys interested in the jaw jackers or similar slammer style set ups. They do help when it comes to the light lipped/ wary trout who hit/drop your bait. If they are set right... The rig goes off so quick and sets the hook that the fish doesn't have the chance to drop the bait.

BUT.... they don't work well on cold or windy days where the holes freeze up. Your line need to be free of any tension so that when the trigger sets the line will set. If your line is frozen in the hole either the rod won't trip or the fish will most likely break you off when your drag/line can't run. You also need to be aware that with a rod/reel you aren't dealing with squid/braid line... You've got your regular flouro or mono to bring in the fish and if the edges of the hole aren't clean or jagged they may break you off. A little experience and practice and they can be used to your advantage.  Just my thoughts on them.

So that's the secret. Have to show a little loving to the fish, then release it and let them tell their buddies about what happened above the ice.  I want to see you guys do that with a Pike.  :woot: Let the camera roll.
