Which Vex
« on: Nov 06, 2019, 09:20 AM »
I have another brand an tired of sending unit back to get fixed.
I primarily fish for lake trout 30-100 feet being the norm. I do fish occasionally for perch in 20-45 feet of water.
I am leaning towards the Fl 12 or 18. Will I be happy with the Fl 12 in deeper water? Considering the Fl18 standard ducer
and then upgrade to the proview 3 tier ducer next fall.  Thoughts? I will not be buying other brands. I have owned 2 other brands
and neither lasted all that long. I will not be disclosing which brand I own now, not into crapping on other brands.
Thank you

This may help ..just note deeper water means narrower beam transducer..a good all around one is 12 deg..bottom zoom is a nice feature..so that leans uou in the FL18 and above

I have had an 18 for years. For what you are looking to use it for it would be fine. First year the FLX series came out I looked and decided that the difference from what I had was not worth the extra cash. The video mentions the 18 comes with the dd-100. If you are buying a new one yes, the one I have didn’t. I added it and am very glad I did! I went with the pro pack. Not telling you which unit to get just what I have. The 18 very user friendly! One thing I would suggest when you decide which unit you want, check out the refurbished units on the Vexilar site. Come with the same warranty as new, might save you a couple of bucks. Good luck!

Flx 20 or 28. You will definitely get some use/value from having zoom!

Thank you, I watched the video an lot of talk about various uses. I found very little info on deep water species like
lakers as often fishing 50-100 feet deep.

20 period. Whether it be the fl or the flx. I own a fl20 going on like 10/11 yrs now had to warranty the tri beam ducer beginning of last year do to a fault they stop selling the triple beam ducer over. And I had to replace the battery about 4 yrs ago. I can’t justify the upgrade to the 28 because my 20 is still working. I would say if money don’t matter the 28 is the ticket, for the rest of us get what is in your price range.

I had an old fl18 deep fished it to over 100 FOW  ,  so if I were buying  a new vex or reconditioned unit I’d go with the 20 or 28

18 or 20 can't go wrong. Have an 8 that ive used for 15 years, replaced the battery once. bought a reconditioned 20 from vexilar same warranty as new, havent had a bit of problem. Have not one single time had to update the programming.

I use an FL-20 , great unit , no problems for years, lots of hours. I have the 9 & 19 degree transducer & it’s great . I fish shallow , 10 ft to 90 ft . Very good target separation

I sold my 18 and bought a 20 and I actually liked my 18 better. The 18 increments are 1,2,3,4 & 10 and the 20 has 1,2,3,4 & 15 so when you get deeper than 80 feet it's almost impossible to use the zoom because 81 feet out of 300 on the right side of the screen is tiny. With the FL 18 it occupies 40% of the right side instead of 26 with the FL 20. It just so happens that I fish a lake regularly at depths from 70 - 100 so it really makes a difference.

In any case you can't go wrong with a Vex. Keep an eye on eBay, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I bought my 20 off of Craigslist for $200!  ….   in part because it was July and 95 degrees out.

Definitely FLX 20 / 28.....Probably the best hardwater purchase I've made is my FLX-28.....Good luck with your decision & with whatever you choose !!
