hand powered ice augers
« on: Nov 27, 2005, 02:52 PM »
Here in central Indiana we are lucky to get 5 weeks of safe ice. Most of the fish are gills and crappies.  At one time I was the young blazin' auger kid, (& spud king before that.)  Now though some 40 years later, it seems the ice, if we have any, is getting harder to drill through.  I'm thinking about asking Santa for a smaller auger.  My current one is a 6" Mora.  Does anyone make a good 5" auger.  The 4" makes me nervous. (Biggest fish we've brought through the ice was a 12 lb channel.  We had to widen the 6" hole a little for that rascal.)

Thanks,

rivereddy

I've got a 5" Strikemaster Lazer.  It cuts extremely quick and easy.  5" is plenty big to pull most fish through.

Lazers are the way to go! I have a 6 inch myself but they cut like no other. ;D

I've used just about every type of hand auger on the market, and the Nils Master is faster and easier to use then any other. Second would be the Normark Fin-Bore and third is the Laser.

A 6" Nils Master will cut faster and easier then a 5" Laser.
