Went out on Sunday to Willow Creek Reservoir on the Rocky Mountain Front. Not much for fishing... managed two 14" Rainbows in about 3 hours. Figured my time was better spent looking over elk and bighorn sheep so I drove over to the Sun River WMA and saw well over 500 elk on the WMA and 200-300 big horn sheep further up the canyon.
As for ice, it was looking good. About 8 inches on Willow Creek. It was warm, but the wind kept the ice from really melting. I drove up to Gibson dam too. Nobody was fishing and I wouldn't recommend anyone try. There was probably 14" of ice, but the entire shoreline was broken up. I suppose the water coming out of the dam was causing the ice near shore to breakup.
Other reports I heard were as follows:
Nilan reservoir was really hot a few days ago, a couple kids said they caught 30 trout in about 3 hours on Thur. the 8th. Also about 8 inches of ice.
A-rod lake, I hadn't heard of it before, but apparently there are three pike and perch lakes about 60 minutes from Great Falls near the town of Brady. All relatively small lakes, but a guy took his kids out there and caught a couple keeper pike and several smaller ones spending most of the time shooting BB guns and otherwise playing around. Also about 8 inches of ice.
