I have a Shapell 3000DX as well.  Instead of defacing the ice house by painting it, I just got a stiff piece of cardboard and used the numbers/letters with the sticky backing you can get at any hardware store.  They need to be 2 inches high.  I used those to put my DNR number on and then put that in the window which qualifies as "plainly visible on the outside."  However you must also put the tag that comes with the license on the ice house as well.

All

I have 2 portables - a QFIII and a Frabill Hideout. Both have plastic license sleeves on the door.

We got 'puters - and I assume printers.....

Get on said 'puter - open up MS Word or similar - set your 'page' to landscape (wide side is up-down),
then select a nice clear font - Arial is my choice, and set the font up to 72 pts (biggest mine will do).

All that done - type in the DNR req'd info of your choice - DNR #, DL # or Name/address. Print it, put it
in a plastic page protecter, put that in the plastic sleeve. You are done - no paint on canvas, no its black fuss.

And yes you need a tag on your shelter - get over it. I buy two - one for each shelter. You can switch a tag between them -
assuming you only have one on the ice (occupied) at any given time, but why risk forgetting it and the ticket.

By the time you tank up the truck, buy bait, fill the lp tank, buy the latest rod/sonar/camera/blurfl/......
and repeat over the course of the winter, a shelter license is a tiny part.

OK- what if, my dad uses my shanty, and my info and license is on it, but I am nowhere to be found. Is that legal? And what if, we use his tag on my shack with my DNR # on it, is that legal? Just covering all the bases.

The regulations say that the ice house must be licensed.  It doesn't say that the licensee is the only one who can use it.   It's just like your car.  You license it, but your dad can use it.

So when is this get together going to happen? I suppose when we get better ice...

We are just down the road from Medicine...

You can get a duplicate license for $2.50.

I put the original on my permanent and carry the duplicate for my portable and haven't had an issue yet.

The license is small. They want the identifying info in letters that are visible:

From the Minnesota regulations:
Fish House or Dark House
The following regulations apply to fish houses, dark houses, and portable
shelters used on all Minnesota waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere
in this booklet.
• All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable
shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have the
complete name and address or driver’s license number or Minnesota
DNR number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the
outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height. Dark houses,
fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while
fishing must be licensed, except that a license is not required on
border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota.
• A tag, furnished with the license, must be attached to the exterior in a
readily visible location.

2 inch high letters for the ID info.

$34.00 for a non resident shelter lic. for a portable. What the he*l. I grew up in MN, spent 25yrs there. Now going back for x-mas and do some fishing with my brothers. Guess What, Brother Nick going to licence my shack and save the $21 or what ever the diff is. I'd rather sit in the cold than give them $34.

OK, time to resurrect my favorite trivia question.

Can anyone guess who referred to Minnesota as "the state where fishing is barely a legal activity"

And the prize goes to ....

Burb

What's really impressive was his response time ... 9 minutes
I've asked that question on other boards and not gotten a correct response in 9 days.

By the way DON'T Google "Barely legal activity" at work
Buck, a warning like that from someone with your Avatar?  I think I'll heed your advice.

Good thing I read this post. Now I know what to expect when I come to find some ice.
Ice doesn't seem to form anymore in Iowa. It was here for a week then gone again. Sure getting sick of all this equipment sitting around not being used.
