Title: Anything other than tubes for Lakers!?
Post by: the force on Jan 03, 2023, 11:54 PM
I find it super hard to beat a 5-6” tube for lakers but canvassing the crowd prior to my next over nighter in BC.
To date I’ve done best with big white or chartreuse tubes for fish >10lbs, however last year a big nasty trout n pout cleaned up the little guys (2lbs) and also pegged a 18lb while night fishing for ling.
I have a pile of spoons but haven’t really used them much, or had enough success to want to use them.
Whatcha all got for intel or ideas when they are ‘off’? Adding some eye candy as a bribe for intel lol.

Swim baits work great too. Just make sure they have stout hooks.

I have had good luck with Sebile Vibrato in both open and ice fishing for lakers. Even if they don't hit it, it calls them in, like few lures do. No bait needed.

I always thought swim baits would work but seem to have more consistent success with tubes… kind of weird.

Interesting, looks a bit like an amped up bladebait? No fish parts or minnows allowed in BC (super lame) so bait free options are perfect.

White Pearl Swedish Pimple
Never tried pimples for lakers, how big do you go? Like the biggest 3” size? I did catch a decent on in a 1.5” dinner bell once, hook was too small though and ended up pulling it.

I'm not knockin em...Vibratos buzz big time on the lift but adding meat kills the action.  Unfortunately, in my experience they seem to attract fish that more often will hit something with sucker meat 10 feet away.
I've probably caught more Lakers (not big...16-24") on standard split tail twister (2 flap) than anything else.  A little bit of Sucker skin hanging.

Thanks to you and FreshwaterPhil I just picked up a LiveTarget Rattlebait (2 7/8 lipless golden shiner) - ouch @ $16cad. Not a bad idea to have something with some more vibration and noise. The trout n pout did pretty well for me last year and also has a rattle.

I've caught lakers on the 2 smallest pimples, as well as the smallest kastmasters while jigging for perch. Typically in the 3-6 lbs range.

Depending on the forage base, but on smelty lakes, jerk shad type swim baits produce ;)

Imagine both, but I use them on jig heads.

Gitzit just came out with some different tubes for musky that look like a paddle tail with a tube skirt.  I bet they'd work nicely and come in a variety of colors.

When I started ice fishing , we used a large silver Swedish Pimple on a hand line. Replaced the treble hook with a large sinlgle  hook and tipped it with a chunk of sucker, a thin strip would flutter as you jigged it. Not sure on the size of the pimple probably at least 3”

Perch colored blade baits work well.  No bait, it ruins the action.

Medium pimples in yellow prism calls them in like a dinner bell.
