7" Mini-Nero
« on: Nov 07, 2019, 09:22 AM »
Got it just in time for my 1st ice trip.   Go to put it on my clam plate but of course it doesn't fit. Auger shaft is larger diameter then clam plate shaft. A 3" piece of 3/4" cpvc pipe makes a fine bushing. Had to enlarge the cpvc I.D a skosh with a large round file.  Then drill another hole in the pvc for the thru- bolt. Also Needed a longer thru-bolt.   Piece of cake.

As for drilling performance it works fine just like the 6" mora. Drilled 75 holes thru 6" hard ice and battery was still 2 bars. The 7" hole is divine compared to a 6" hole when dealing with gaffing 5-6lb rainbows.

So it was worth the $80 I paid for it.  ;D

The Nero comes with an extension with mutiple holes in it. This thing will sit up at chin level if you want it to! ;D

I also just got my 7" Nero --- curious if it will attach to the clam extension instead of the Nero extension?  That way it would go straight to the clam plate.  Anyone else try that?

Will the adapter that comes with the Nero fit a 1/2" chuck?

Any hands-free auger blade cover options available for the Nero? Anyone make something?

I’m really excited to get a 7” auger, but I don’t know if the extra inch is worth fumbling with the auger blade cover.

Man if you fish for larger trout or other species the extra inch makes a huge difference in landing them.

Yes.

Thanks Slayer. Going to order one and finally ditch the ol Jiffy 30. Beyond tired of lugging that thing out.

I was an 8" guy for 40 years until I got a 7" Nero two years back.  Perfectly adequate for chunky Northerns and Slayer sized trout.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

It does fit, but the Clam extensions are poorly manufactured so there's a fairly high chance it will be bent out of the package. I am using this setup and mine wobbles but still cuts just fine, the holes are just slightly misshaped.

i used to run an 8" hole and fish for just crappie and gills and loved the 8" hole until i used the 7" hole.  fish that pop off the hook at the hole weather my fault or the fish head shake don't get lost nearly as much in the 7" hole as compared to the 8" hole i have found in my experiences also.
