Dobbers vs. Bobbers

In my area as a kid we were taught that those little devises used to connect to the line to keep your presentation suspended were DOBBERS. We would laugh at someone when they would use the term BOBBER... In Maine I knew a fella that called them BOBBA-FLOATS!   
Well, now that I am older and a fraction wiser and  have traveled a bit.; I have learned that nearly the entire world calls them BOBBERS!
Is it possible that the term DOBBER is limited to my little pond?
What did you first learn them to be?

Always called them bobbers. Have heard them referred to as floats before, but never dobbers. That doesn't even make sense to me. I mean bobbers bob, and floats float, but..dob? Is that a verb?

I have heard them called dobbers down in the wappinger falls area in ny.  That is the only place I've ever heard them called that.  I call them floats now, mostly from those expensive versions I use for "float fishing" with my centerpin, but growing up i knew them as bobbers!

Ancient thread, but Google lead me here. Growing up in Poughkeepsie (technically LaGrange) and right near Wappinger. I always remembered calling them dobbers growing up.

Kids and normal adults call them bobbers. Centerpin users, who think they are a cut above, call them floats. Fly fishermen, the snooty ones, call them "strike indicators"  I think of them as being like training wheels. Kids use them until they learn to feel the tug and set the hook. I balk at using them on the river for bows, but I do make an exception for ice fishing. I use slip 'floats' with the picky eaters as shown by a friend who catches lots of(mostly small) lakers. It's either painful or amusing to watch my bud, who won't use a float while ice fishing, miss so many strikes.

I graduated from RCK high and we always called them bobbers..And my grandparents lived in LaGrange by the entrance /to the parkway..

Ah, mystery solved.... Dobber is Dutch for float....There is a lot of Dutch influence in this area with the like using the Dutch word Kill for creek ie Fishkill. I guess dobber is a little know bit of Dutch influence that is around here. Too bad my Dad wasn't around to learn that..

Here in Wisconsin if it's round it's bobber, any other shape is a float.
A dobber is what you use to mark your bingo card.

Yup if its round its a bobber ,if it has a stem or slip type its a float here in Michigan.

I don't care if someone calls it a float, I mean it does float. Bobber is what almost everyone calls them, it even says it on the package.

I've never heard anyone, from any country call them doubers. That's just goofy.
