Last couple years I've been taking the tops of open water rods and epoxying them into a 1" wood dowel. Router a flat reel seat in the dowel the attach a reel with heat shrink. All but 4 of my rods I use are made like this, 2 I bought and I made 2 light jigging rods this year, can make them any length you want.
I was considering this DIY ice shelter over the commercial type.Does anyone have detailed plans?(Image removed from quote.)

I have made a few ice rods from old broken spinning rods.I would cut off handle and cut off tapered peices until I can get it all to fit back in the original handle. Old flimsy ugly sticks are my favorite
This year I taught a neighbor's kid how make "Salt Valley" tipups. One by six boards cut square, a couple inches of PVC pipe to hold line, piano wire trip flag and a pan head screw with a notch cut into it for the trigger/release. It's a Cub Scout project, but sure felt satisfying to bring out some "old dog" tricks. That got me thinking. Back in the 60s and 70s I remember seeing tip downs made of 1x4 pine and a bent coat hanger wire with an egg sinker slipped on to make 'em neutrally balanced. Then there were the hole cover ones with a schooley reel and a bent nail trip for the flag...Gimme some stories, and hopefully some wood shop plans or at least ideas. The older, the better. It'd be cool to learn some tricks from outside my neighborhood.
How about you share the "Salt Valley Tip Up" plans? I still can't envision one.
