I am going to have to try this... I usually unwind 15-20 feet of line and then wind it oppisite of the rest of the line that is left on the spool. Once the fish takes out that line, there is a couple of inches where the line has to turn the spool again in the direction of the backing.... just a slight jerk when it goes the other way will set the hook if your hooks are sharp.
Born to fish, fish to live..... gotta drink something so it might as well be a cold beer!

no because you wrap the line over the band and then the fish hits the band it should jerk it and then break it allowing it to keep spooling

Dave,i also had a little trouble understanding it,I took one of my tip-ups and set it up with the rubber band.Try it and it will be clear. If you pull kind of hard the rubberband does in fact break. This is a great ideas long as the d.e.c. doesn't outlaw it.

Is it a MUST to use this method with circle hooks? I can see it working but don't understand why it wouldn't work with say eagle claw bait holders.

OK so what does this do put a little tension on the line? im going to try this so one more thing do you wind it up the same way cause in one post someone said wind it up in the oppesite direction.

I wind it in the same direction. It works as a "hooker setter" if you will. When the fish takes of with the bait, it will hit the band and the tension pulls back setting the hook. I use size 4 or 6 Gamagatsu (sp) circle hooks.

I just returned from a trip to a lake where I was targeting walleye and fished 24 hrs. I had 5 flags and had 5 fish. I set my first rubber band ( one about the size you would find one a daily newpaper if you ever had one delivered to your home) about 10"-16" above the depth marker. This sets the hook when the walleye run or take the minnow. I use a more sustantial rubber band about 10' above the depth marker, this one is so the fish will not spool my line. Some of the walleye caught were 24" and never broke the first rubber band. Just make sure to check the rubber bands each outting as the cold is hard on them but a package is like $0.99.

I always use circle hooks as there is no need to use anything else. The fish are usually hooked in the corner of the mouth or real close to it. This method provides for selective harvest of the fish. No deep hook sets so the fish can be released with minimal damage ;D

I was usung 5" sucker minnows hooked just infront of the dorsal fin.

Keep calm and return fire...

This is a great dicussion...  I've never had too much trouble catching the walley on tip-ups but i gave up on most trout a long time ago.  I am surely going to try this on trout this weekend!!

I finally got a chance to use this idea, I was tending other flags when one went up far away. I finished with tending and walked over and the band had set the hook on a 3lb salmon. He didn't break the band nor spool my line. Thank you IS members for sharing this little but effective trick.

 set me straight please???
so the fish takes your bait and moves off and the band is around the spool and stretches setting the hook and the fish continues to move off or runs breaking the band and letting line spool off as normal? so you have to replace the band after every fish?

been buying my rubberbands from the local baitshop 300 for $1.99. Walker Downrigger packaged. use them on the boat in the summer. more consistant than a clamp style release.    really great for the walleye.   should be as good or better for this style fishing.
