Spray Lakes Update with Pics
« on: Jan 03, 2010, 07:57 PM »
Was a pretty good day at Spray Lakes on Saturday. there were about a dozen tents set up all across the lake from the boat launch. The ice is 13' thick and about 3-4" snow covered. We were set up about 9:00 and I caught my two before 11:00. My son Bill caught his two around 2:00 and 3:00. They ranged between 1.5 to 3lbs. Good eating, but too small to enter these fish into the contest.

Catch for the Day:

 Thanks,

These are Lake trout, F & W officer said that these are of average size for Spray Lake, although there have been some lunkers pulled out occasionally. :icefish:

Was there on Friday, fished in 60 feet water, caught my 3 lakers about the same size, was using a buzz bomb with a half smelt attached, lost a bigger fish around 30 feet up, big red bar on my flasher and rod  tip in the hole for 30 seconds and my 8 lb test broke, it hit my buzz bomb like a frieght train as I was bringing it up to rebait.

Hey imgonnamissher, what did u catch those lakers on at Spray?
I tried there all day about two weeks back, and tried everything, smelts, buzz bombs, chartruse jigs ect and only caught one little laker by luck. I moved around lots too thinking it was my location, closer to shore and farther out but nothing really.

Thanks for your help.

I used a new method that was passed down from a friend. I used a silver Williams wabler (50W) with red holographic on 1/2; The treble was removed and replaced with a 1/64 weight black jig tied about 4" below the spoon. A #7 barrel swivel between the spoon and jig helps keep the bait from spinning too much.  I ripped a head off of a smelt and hooked it to the jig from just under the mouth. When you fish this setup, you first find bottom and then bring it up about a foot or two to set your depth. Then you bring it all the way up to the surface and let it free fall to the bottom. If your gonna get a strike, it will be before it hits bottom, or just as it hits bottom.  Worked pretty good!!!
