Friday night wasn't hot but pretty good bite. Took home a little over 100 and got to meet PreacherChuck. Good luck with the light Mud_N_Fun, I am enjoying the one I built. Between my light and the one my buddy brought we had a 40 yard green glowing radius. Will hopefully see some of you guys again Friday night.

I am hoping to finally get back out for at least a  short time this week-end. I just have to be really careful. Hoping the shore ice  holds up.

What part of the lake normally loses ice first in the spring?

Just like most lakes, its the shore ice, & the north end will probably open up 1st., due to the creek  flowing in at the launch.

I dont know how the ice is & wont be able to check it till Friday, afternoon. Taking the wife on trip for a couple of days. Looks like, Shipsy, Knutsons,Cabelas, & hopefully Franks & maybe Jays in Clare. Then down the Lk. Mich. shoreline. Gonna try to get smelt jr. to check the conditions & I will TRY to let ya know how it looks.Right now, its raining & pretty warm :(

The ice on the north end was good last nite and we seen a truck out there too. Fishing wasnt that great. The walk off leaving was much easier than the walk out arriving due to top layer freeze. Maybe 20 other shanties out there last nite. Just nice to get out on the ice this time of year. With this rain the ice may have thinned out near shore but it is still safe on Gull north as of last nite

Thank you. Hoping others will share what they see. With this weather, things can change fast. That creek can really mess things up.

just tossing this out there for you locals     but this time of year up at Higgins the smelt are heavily staging and are aggressive during the daylight hours.
here we are usually losing ice by now     and wondered if maybe there is a day bite coming soon if the ice holds and has anyone even tried this in the past?
it just got me thinking after reading wildlife chasers post that their best bite was before dark

The day bite has happened a bit , in the last few weeks. Most guys are tight lipped about it. The smelt this year are just like they were last year,.... hanging in that 70'-100' of water, a solid 1/2 mile from the creek. I do think that on a cloudy day, you could catch 1 or 2 ;D. For the last few years, the smelt have stayed deep & then came in quick. I want to try the day bite, but it just hasn't worked out for me. Neither has laker fishing this year >:( >:(

I  hope no one would try driving on the ice from the north launch :o the opening around the creek has been really getting wider the last couple weeks a vehicle might bust up the ice at the launch >:(. I have not had much luck on gull for day bite :( but it doesn't mean there cant be one. Higgins I have hit them during the day beginning of March. I might make it down Friday night for the first time this year :) :) :) :).

I am hoping to get out there ,Fri. night.  Right now I am in Shipshewana, w/ the wife, having a great time. The arm is doing pretty darn good, considering. Did find out one thing a few hrs. ago. I need to wear a PFD on the boat from now on, cant swim for crap anymore due to the injury. I will be in about 80' of water, give a yell out for me, if I make it home in time, I will yell back ;D.     Phil

Hoping to get out to do a bit of fishing, but really looking forward to making some new friends &  meeting up w/ some old friends. Missing a few weeks on the hardwater has really been tough.

Is there anyone from the Detroit metro area that's going out or wants to go out Sunday. My friends all want to stick to familiar grounds. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO EXPERIENCE SMELTING ON GULL LAKE and don't want to make the 2 hour drive by myself. I can drive or contribute to gas....non smoker
