I can fully understand the fact that if you get up in the north with some crystal water and under some circumstances you need to change tactics but I am one of those conventional fisherman.

I look at like this, the fish are gonna bite or their not. Now is using the special outfit and line time after time after time to hook that one fish that was finacky that day and decided to bite because the presentation was right? I would rather wait for that day when the fish are on and I can hook 5 or 6 and land 4 or 5. Look I don't want to take away from the spirit of fishing. But the plane and simple fact is that guys that throw plugs and drift don't do it correctly to begin with and proper tecnique is paramount when your searching for the all mighty steelhead. When you become proficient then worry about the lader. 6 lb test stren low vis green is all ya need and if I know I am gonna fish a stretch of river that has jams I'm switching to 8 lb. Whenever I throw plugs I use the 20lb braid. And I have never lost a fish that I hooked with a plug on braided that didn't get tangled in jams. When I throw spinners that are awefully deadly in the spring I throw them with 6lb test because knowing how the act, at what depth and all the yada yada yada it is important to feel them.

ALERT Please do not reply to this thread as I'm telling you "You method sucks" I've been on the river and the fancy schmancy guy is catching fish and I'm not and other days the fancy schmancy guy ain't catching jack and I'm limiting out. Long live the almighty steely!

I would definetly head to the Saginaw river for some "friendly competition"

Flag good luck on getting vex to share his honeyhole's hes got a bunch and he never shares info on anywhere hes fishin! Thats ok though I got a few of my own...

here r the first and basic rules.... no more than 4 per team, we fish the same section of river, winning team goes by total length of all keepers per team. i don't always carry a scale!! what do ya think steel, for a first draft?? we can modify this of course

Oh I understand. I start talking about steelies and it gets the blood flowing for everybody. Blue is a big eye fisherman. I was supose to get down there and fish for some wallys with him and then the big warm up came. Were just trying to plan something out for next year. Thats all.

just to fill ya in 52, i owe flag some walleye fishing, the weather last week killed it! now we have a friendly thing going between a few buds, team stinky pinky and team steel. you can join team steel if ya want and come to the sag nasty for a day of fun fishing next winter if ya want, and if they accept ya?

Actually I'm interested in getting into something like that, I've been married 10 years and its hard to find new fishing buds lol. I understand the fever right now I'm torn between Ice and waiting for that 45 degree water temp. It's gonna be a fun spring because every year is getting better steely fishin and in all honesty we have a walleye run coming and a smally run and those smallies on the huron are something else when you get those big bertha spawning females. I'm intereseted in getting in on a team though either way I have all my own gear for all seasons except a boat so I'm game for anything.

THe sag trip "tourny" btwn team steel and team stinky pinky would be a total whipe out... we'd wax you guys. Nobody does it like steelheaders.

As far as the leader thing goes, id rather catch finnicky fish than aggressive fish. I love altering my techniques of fishing to adapt to the fishes attitude of that day. If they aint biting i'll stay there all day changin stuff around just to hook 1 fish. I love catching these early slow steelies and beleive its important for any experienced fisherman to be able to alter his techniques to adapt to the conditions of that certain day and the attitude of the fish to be able to hook up with fish on any given day of the week. The hott 2 wks of April i wouldnt miss tho... HOT AGGRESSICE acrobatic steelies with numerous 20-30 hook up days is GREAT!!!!!!

We might have to dicuss the pro staff thing. Im game for the trip next year. And thanks for agreeing with me on the light line there vex. It is shi**y up here 40+ mph winds and SNOW alot of it. I went down to the river this morning but could only fish for about 1/2 hour. to damn windy. and the wind chill is in the -teens Im gonna try again tomrrow its gonna be nice.

Hopefully next week flag... I'll keep in touch with you on my work schedule for next week. I'll get up there soon tho! I like getting out and fishing new water! Been doin it a lot the past 2 years and really enjoy it!!! You guys handle it from here on out, gotta git rested up for tomarrow's day on the river!

I normally fish the White and the PM but I know the Muskegon pretty well and those pics looked like they had MUSKEGON written all over them
