The rainbow maggots from knutson's are cheaper and I always had pretty good success with them I just wish I could figure out how to keep them alive longer!

With maggots there is a fine line with temp to keep them. I always had good luck keeping them in the fridge

For maggots:  I keep them in a zip lock bag zipped shut with as much air out as you can get.  The temp is close to freezing.  I have a small fridge in my basement just for bait.  I know this sounds a little odd, but it works.  I got the system from the Jada Bait web site.  I've been doing this for years and I have maggots left in May from the batch I bought in December.  Always.

I keep my maggots {spikes} in my fridge door. I have had good luck in the past and they last for months. My wax worms I keep in the coolest part of my basement on the floor around 50 degrees give or take. They say they do best around 50 or so. Last year they lasted pretty good. I keep a thermometer close and I can regulate the warmth by closing the door to the other part of the basement. I just got mine yesterday.

I've never used any colored wax worms and now you have me wondering if they work better than the natural colored ones and which one of the dyed colors which color works the best.

Wow, though I can see how it happened I'm just wondering why the four of you answered the way you did.  It is clear that you didn't read the entire post.  If you had you would have known that question was how to dye waxworms, not how to keep them from dying!  I have not tried to dye them however you can buy dyed spikes so It is possible.
That's what I was referring to..........dyed spikes from knutson's

Well I gotta tell this story. I got 1000 spikes the other day and they arrived in double zip locked bags. I checked they were alive, then I put them in my ref. in the garage. The next day my son went fishing at 6AM. He yelled "dad they escaped the bags and the ref. and were all over the floor. I sucked them up with a dust buster and put the in a ziplock and then in a Folgers coffee can.  ;D

We've had good luck using the Krazy Dust from Your Bobber's Down during trout season (haven't really used it for ice fishing).  It sticks well to wax worms, even when submerged.  Pretty sure the dust is oil based and it is definitely not toxic (we haven't started glowing yet!).  Also, a little goes a long way with this stuff, so you definitely get your money's worth.

Have you had better luck with the dyed waxies compared to the natural colored ones?  Which color dye did you have the best luck with.
