Treble hook in my face!

I originally posted this in the Idaho page but this is probably a better spot for it.

Kind of a freak thing happened this morning. I work in rathdrum and I got off at 6 am. I got a wild hair to go check the thickness at hauser on my way home. I pulled up to the launch and went to get my auger. When I pulled my sled I had a loose pole that had a spoon with a treble hook on it. The rod tip got stuck on my bed cover as I slid the sled and it loaded up. When it broke free it sent the rod tip/ spoon flying into my face. Buried one of the hooks about 1” below my eye. I headed back to work to give the guys some entertainment and have them cut the spoon off so I didn’t look like I had some strange new piercing pulling down on my lower eyelid. Went to the hospital where they tried to back it out with no luck. They made a small incision to the barb and pulled it out. Be careful out there. Strange things happen. I will start organizing my gear a little better to prevent it from happening again.

This is why I always wear shades while I'm fishing.  It's so easy to get a lure slingshoted at your face if a fish comes unbuttoned or breaking free of a snag.  Even had a pike shake his head as I unhooked it and somehow ended up with a spook hanging off my face.

Old prescripton bottles make good bait covers that have treble hooks.

Yeeeesh!  Sorry that happened but happy to hear that you're alright!  And as bad as it was it's crazy to think how close it was to being incredibly worse!

I have popped a few hooks out of folks- including one from the top of my wife's head. I was shown a trick by an E.R doc when I was a kid- push the hook down to disengage the barb, and jerk the hook out backwards with a loop of heavy fishing line. So far this has worked for me, and the half dozen or so unfortunates I have tried it on over the years. Would have had to think long and hard about trying it so close to your eye tho....

Wow, too close for comfort there!  I usually just rip them out of my hand with a pliers.  Glad you sought medical attention for that one.  Happy to hear you are okay.

We play with sharp objects, crap happens. I remember a few years back, someone slipped and got cut by an auger. Nailed an artery, damn near died. I try to keep my blades covered when not in use.
