I'm a sucker for rainbows
« on: Dec 12, 2013, 07:26 AM »
Hello everyone, I plan on fishing a small local lake in upstate New York this weekend. I usually set my tip-ups for pike while I jig for perch. I've noticed where I generally set my tip ups it drops off in depth going from ten feet or so to sixty rather rapidly. Suckers tend to be my favorite pike bait and since the lake is small (99 acres) I plan on using relatively small suckers. Pike are a ton of fun to catch through the ice, but I'm dying to grill a trout. The lake is stocked with rainbows so I guess my question is will small sucker work for rainbows?

Small tube jigs and bucktail jigs tipped with a meal worm works great on rainbows for me here in southwest Wyoming. I never heard of anyone using a sucker around here, but i could be wrong.

Depends on the size of the rainbow. A few years ago a friend caught a six pound rainbow deadsticking with a 7" sucker. I get quite a few flags on tip-ups only to find it run out about ten feet and
dropped. When resetting my tip-up I noticed a five pound trout going after the sucker as I was pulling it out of the hole. The bigger trout are so finicky if they feel a quick-strike rig they'll drop it.
Because here I can only use two rods I haven't really targeted trout that way but I would think a single hook under the dorsal fin could be effective.
