First Ice Trout of The Year
« on: Dec 05, 2004, 10:29 PM »
Well I went to my favorite small rainbow factory for my first ice trip this year. Usually at this lake I catch 50 - 100 foot long dinks here. But the meat is orange red and fantastic because of the freshwater shrimp and crayfish diet. This lake always has big fish though.
Well today the fishing was tough, we only caught 27 all day between the three of us. But low and behold, all but two were between 2 and 4 pounds. We were fishing ratsos, stingers, or deadsticked crawlers. We tipped the lures with crawler pieces too. We were in 15 - 25 feet of water and most fish were coming in at 8 - 15 feet. Would have probably caught only a couple were it not for our vexilars.
I was happy. I would rather catch 10 two to 4 pounders than 100 half pounders. Will post pics when developed.

Western Colorado. Vega Reservoir is on the lower slopes of the 11,000 foot Grand Mesa, at 9000 feet.

but the question is.... is rifle gap ready for you?
I also caught my first trout of the year at vega with mackdaddy.

Lets go easterners! Catch up! Think COLD and it will get COLD.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.
