super simple hook set rig
« on: Dec 20, 2008, 11:29 AM »
Oxquo, in the inventions thread got me thinkin about these rigs again. I really wanted to buy a Slammer but money is tight this time of year.
I studied Oxquo's design and simplified it even more. it is smply a dowel and 2 finishing nails, scew hook and scew eye

I already had the holder layin around and wanted it removeable so I can still use the holder alone.
Just tweak the finishing nail a bit to adjust sensitivity. This thing works le a charm in the kitchen. I'll ave to get out and give it the true test

That is a very good idea.  I am thinking a eye screw instead.  It will  lay together and not come apart at the base and can still be folded flat.  Thanks for the idea.

That is a good simple idea.  One extra thing I'd do is put some kind of a plastic coating on the finishing nail to prevent it from nicking your rod guide.

OK... Stupid question. What is your line doing going up towards the top on the dowel and then back down?? Why wouldn't you just let it go straight down from the rod tip??

I believe it has to go up so it pulls the dowel and nail away from the rod tip to set it off, if it went straight down it'd do nothing.

yes exactly. Th line goig up to the top of the dowel gives it the force required to trip it.
Plasticote on the nails would be good, never thought of it eventually nicking the guide. Shrink tubing should work too, will try later

Have you tested the actual hook setting? It seems like there is a lot of slack in the line.

oh ya....there is quite the hook setting action. There is more rod movement than line slack, if anything I'd be afraid of it pulling the lips right off a fish. Funny, but, not the desired effect

If you would put a small weight weight on the end of the dowel and the line going straight down to the water then the fish pulling on the line would make the rod tip drop down and the dowel with weight attached would drop towards the ground therefore eliminating the slack line.

I guess that's kinda where I was going earlier.

it seems to me you would want to pull the rod tip down more than up to spring it, as the rod is being bent and the flex is pulling it up. a little down force would probably trip it easier depending on what you are trying to catch.

I see my pics dissapeared, will have to fix that when I get home
I field tested the rig this weekend on perch and it works a charm. Didn't miss a fish that bit it until they started biting so light it was nearly undetectable. All in all, very successful.
I will be trying it out on white fish and lekers this week sometime
