Tipdowns have their time and place and at times outfish other methods. I use tipdowns when fishing for crappies with live bait (minnows) and work well have caught perch, pickerel and bass on them. Drawback is on cold days and can't keep the hole from freezeing over allowing the the line  to go out. They are fun to watch go down and many guys have made their own coming up with different versons.

I have great success using tip downs for crappie. The key to keeping other species off the line is to set them high. I set mine half way down with small minnow, 3lbs line and a 14 treble.

They work great during dusk with little shiners fished a little bit off of bottom.

Its all I use for craps. Have some jack traps but they come out only on big water . I use innovative tip downs. Great. Easy to use and  collapse into itself for easy to transport and store.

Interesting you would post this! I recently took my 5 year old son out on the ice, and we set out a few tip-downs while I jigged. I managed 1 crappie while jigging, and the tip downs produced 15 crappies! We lost a few of the 15 but was being out fished for sure! Around here it is all guys use. Find yourself a nice design, and hunker down in the workshop and make yourself a few! Well worth it!
